State Park Ranger Manager I

This recruitment is for current vacancies at North Point State Park and Tuckahoe State Park and may also be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification or function. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

About the Role

Provides supervision of subordinate employees and direction in the daily operation of North Point State Park or Tuckahoe State Park. This position manages park operations in accordance with short-term and long-term resource management and recreation goals, ensuring a safe and attractive park setting for visitors.

Responsibilities

• Oversee visitor resources, personnel, equipment, and facility management, maintenance, and protection of Maryland State Parks.
• Develop strategies to enhance park programs and operations, maximize revenues, and meet visitor expectations for quality resource-based recreation and interpretive services.
• Ensure proper allocation and use of Maryland Park Service resources, including personnel, equipment, and funding.
• Review, evaluate, and support emergency response capabilities.
• Develop plans for visitor services, resource protection, and employee safety activities to safeguard visitors, personnel, and resources.
• Serve as a liaison with local governments, businesses, and community groups on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources.
• Enforce DNR regulations and policies to ensure public safety and protect Maryland’s natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources.

Requirements

Experience: Eight years of experience supervising personnel engaged in park or forest operations work.

• Candidates may substitute additional experience in park or forest operations work at the rate of two years for each year of supervisory experience for up to two years of the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest management, natural resources management, parks and recreation, business management, education, history, or a related natural science from an accredited college or university and four years of experience supervising personnel engaged in park or forest operations work for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in the same fields for five years of the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in management and program clerical and assistance classifications or specialties in the general, administrative, clerical, and office services field on a year-for-year basis for the required experience, with four years in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional experience managing park operations and supervising employees in a Maryland State Park.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with budget and personnel management.
• Experience managing and maintaining park facilities and grounds.
• Experience managing natural, cultural, and historical resources.
• Experience working with community and government agency partners to provide public safety and resource protection.

Licenses and Certifications

• Employees in this classification may be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license for the State of Maryland if assigned duties involving the operation of a motor vehicle.
• Must complete First Responder Training or equivalent first aid training.

Special Requirements

• Subject to call-in 24 hours a day.
• May be assigned to any county in the State of Maryland.
• Upon permanent appointment, may be required to reside in the assigned county or region.
