Whitley Penn, one of the nation’s leading audit, tax, and advisory firms, is looking for a State & Local Tax Manager to join a collaborative, high-growth team that emphasizes open-door policies, entrepreneurial thinking, and shared knowledge.

About the role

The State & Local Tax Manager is responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely preparation of all client assignments, managing multiple projects simultaneously, developing and training associates, and contributing to new-business development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide state & local income/franchise tax consulting and compliance services to a diverse client base operating in numerous states
  • Manage state voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), state tax due diligence, and state income/franchise tax audits
  • Advise clients on state income/franchise tax sourcing, nexus, and accounting for state income taxes
  • Review and/or prepare state income tax returns
  • Develop, maintain, and manage client relationships; monitor engagement economics and coordinate staffing and workflow on multiple engagements
  • Manage deadlines and engagement budgets; keep Partners updated on engagement status
  • Research technical issues to assure compliance with state and local tax laws and regulations
  • Deliver exceptional client service by understanding client operations and business objectives; identify additional potential business opportunities
  • Supervise, teach, and evaluate associates and interns, including delegation of assignments and detailed review of work
  • Actively participate in business proposals, networking, and recruiting opportunities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Master’s degree preferred
  • Active CPA License
  • 5–7 years of state & local income/franchise tax compliance and consulting experience
  • Corporate & partnership state & local income/franchise tax experience
  • Advanced technical knowledge of state income/franchise tax law, regulations, and guidance in Texas and other key states
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with a broad range of individuals
  • Professional presence and leadership skills; ability to mentor and develop staff
  • Experience building and maintaining excellent client relationships and expanding books of business

Schedule

Fully in-office position; general work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8 hours/day between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with overtime as needed.
