State Director, Indiana
About the role
The Indiana State Director is the senior leader responsible for driving statewide public policy strategy, grassroots organizing, government affairs, and coalition engagement. This role serves as the primary spokesperson and strategic leader for AFP-Indiana, overseeing a high-performing team and advancing policy outcomes at the local, state, and federal levels. You will partner closely with legislators, donors, activists, coalition partners, and national stakeholders to execute impactful campaigns and achieve measurable policy wins.
Responsibilities
- Lead Statewide Strategy: Develop and execute a data-driven, long-term strategic plan to advance priority public policy initiatives and grassroots campaigns across the state.
- Government Affairs & Policy Advocacy: Build and drive a legislative agenda, engaging with the Governor, state legislature, and federal delegation to influence policy outcomes.
- Team Leadership: Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and results-driven performance.
- Grassroots & Volunteer Mobilization: Recruit, develop, and activate grassroots volunteers, activists, and community leaders to support advocacy campaigns and policy reform.
- Coalition & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strategic relationships with business leaders, policymakers, media, and nonprofit partners to expand influence and impact.
- Public Relations & Communications: Serve as the lead spokesperson, delivering consistent messaging through media, events, and public forums.
- Fundraising & Donor Development: Cultivate and steward donor relationships and philanthropic partnerships to support sustainable state operations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with national teams and other state chapters on multi-state initiatives, policy campaigns, and strategic priorities.
Requirements
- Proven experience in public policy, government affairs, political campaigns, or advocacy leadership.
- Track record of building and managing high-level relationships (elected officials, donors, or influencers).
- Strong leadership and people management experience.
- Exceptional communication skills (public speaking, media, and executive-level writing).
- Demonstrated success in coalition building, stakeholder engagement, and grassroots organizing.
- Ability to develop strategy, solve complex problems, and execute in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.

- Competitive compensation with a range of $145,000 - $165,000 per year, including potential bonus earnings.
Pay
The anticipated base salary range for this role is $145,000 - $165,000 per year. Additional bonus earnings may represent a meaningful portion of total compensation.
