About the role
The Standards Publications Specialist supports the publication of standards and related content in support of UL Standards & Engagement's mission to make the world safer, more secure, and more sustainable.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and support publishing activities associated with the development, maintenance, and release of standards, technical documents, and related publications.
- Prepare, edit, proof, and format standards content, ensuring accuracy, adherence to style requirements, and readiness for publication.
- Utilize Oxygen XML Editor to review, edit, and validate XML documents used within structured publishing workflows.
- Apply working knowledge of NISO Standards Tag Suite (STS) to support content tagging, document structure validation, metadata management, and publication quality assurance activities.
- Review tables, figures, charts, references, annexes, and other document elements to ensure formatting consistency, proper organization, and alignment with publishing standards.
- Conduct comprehensive quality control reviews to identify and resolve formatting, content, structural, and publication-related issues prior to release.
- Maintain organized records, document repositories, version control processes, and supporting documentation to ensure traceability and effective content management.
- Collaborate with standards development teams, technical contributors, and internal stakeholders to facilitate efficient publishing workflows and timely project completion.
- Identify opportunities to improve publishing processes, tools, and workflow efficiencies, and recommend practical solutions to enhance quality and productivity.
- Manage multiple publishing assignments simultaneously, balancing competing priorities while consistently meeting established deadlines, service expectations, and quality standards.
Requirements
- Demonstrated application and knowledge in technical editing, document preparation, proofreading, and publication quality assurance with exceptional attention to detail.
- Knowledge of structured content principles and XML-based publishing environments, including the ability to navigate and support digital publishing workflows.
- Experience in Oxygen XML Editor for content editing, review, validation, and document management activities.
- Experience with NISO STS or comparable XML tagging used within standards or structured content publishing.
- Ability to evaluate system functionality, identify root cause, and recommend practical solutions.
- Practical knowledge in the area of specialization with the ability to execute end-to-end processes or structure projects to deliver successful outcomes.
- Problem-solving skills and experience analyzing and addressing issues with expertise in developing and implementing contingency plans.
- Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, with ability to communicate key concepts and information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Positive and collaborative interpersonal skills, with proven capability in fostering collaboration and partnership across teams to develop solutions with broad impact.
- Strong organizational and project coordination skills with ability to manage detailed publishing activities from initiation through final release.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Publishing, Information Science, Library Science, or related field.
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 3 years related work experience.
- Experience in preparing, editing, and quality assuring publication-ready technical documents.
