Staff Software Engineer (Pro Donate)
Job Summary
We’re hiring a Staff Frontend Engineer to join the Donate team at GoFundMe. This role involves leading projects, shaping the frontend technical roadmap, and setting engineering standards for code quality, test coverage, and observability.
About the Role
The position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and requires an in-office presence 3 days a week. The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of experience building, testing, and shipping complex, customer-facing web applications, including 2+ years at Staff or Lead scope. They should also have deep, hands-on expertise with React, Next.js, and TypeScript, advanced frontend testing experience, and strong command of client-side performance and frontend observability.
Responsibilities
- Lead several concurrent projects and help shape the frontend technical roadmap for the team's checkout experiences.
- Own frontend architecture, design component systems, state management, and module boundaries that stay scalable, testable, and maintainable.
- Set and uphold the team's engineering standards for code quality, patterns, and code review, and continually raise the bar.
- Own and evolve the team's testing strategy across unit, integration, and end-to-end layers, driving high-value coverage in payment-critical flows.
- Build and mature frontend observability (monitoring, alerting, and log analytics), and own incidents end-to-end through resolution and postmortems, so problems are caught and fixed before they reach donors.
- Champion AI-assisted development practices, such as agentic workflows and AI-assisted review and test generation, to raise both velocity and quality.
- Mentor and grow the engineers around you, and partner with product, design, and backend stakeholders to shape priorities and represent frontend engineering across teams.
Requirements
- 8+ years building, testing, and shipping complex, customer-facing web applications, including 2+ years at Staff or Lead scope.
- Deep, hands-on expertise with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Prominent ownership of frontend architecture that scales across teams and codebases, and a track record of setting engineering standards others adopt.
- Advanced frontend testing experience, with a proven ability to drive meaningful coverage in business-critical flows.
- Strong command of client-side performance and frontend observability (monitoring, logging, alerting, and log analytics) to diagnose, prevent, and optimize issues in production.
- Ability to turn high-fidelity designs into pixel-perfect, responsive, and accessible interfaces using design systems and modern CSS.
- Secure-by-default practices in payment-adjacent flows that handle sensitive user data.
- Fluency with Git, CI/CD, and agile, iterative development.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with payments or checkout flows, and operating applications through seasonal or event-driven peak load.
- Demonstrated use of AI development tooling (agentic workflows, AI-assisted review or test generation) in production.
- Experience defining observability standards or shared monitoring frameworks for a frontend organization.
- Backend familiarity and integrating frontend apps with modern API layers (GraphQL or REST).
- Infrastructure and delivery tooling: CI/CD pipelines, containerization, orchestration, and cloud platforms.
