About the Role

The Surgical Short Stay unit (SSU) primarily cares for post-operative patients requiring a stay of 24 hours or less, including same-day surgeries. The unit focuses on discharging patients quickly and safely once discharge criteria are met. Key goals for patients include walking, eating solid foods, voiding spontaneously, and managing pain.

Common surgeries in this unit include hysterectomy, hernia repair, thyroidectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic appendectomy, excision of endometriosis, robotic prostatectomy, nephrectomy, and transurethral resection of the prostate. As primary care without patient care assistants (PSAs), nurses are responsible for vital signs, blood sugar checks, urine output tracking, patient ambulation, and call light response.

This position provides general nursing care to patients and families across diverse healthcare settings while collaborating with the healthcare team. The role adheres to nursing practice standards defined by the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment/Diagnosis (30%): Performs initial, ongoing, and functional health status assessments for the patient population.
  • Outcomes Identification/Planning (30%): Documents planned nursing interventions based on nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems to achieve patient outcomes.
  • Implementation/Evaluation (20%): Evaluates and documents patient responses to nursing interventions and outcome achievement; revises the plan of care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Leadership (10%): Actively participates in process improvement activities to enhance clinical quality, customer satisfaction, and financial performance.
  • Operations (10%): Contributes to the efficiency and reliability of the unit as a High Reliability Organization (HRO), focusing on safety, quality, and performance.

Requirements

  • Active RN - Registered Nurse license from the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Field of study: Nursing.
  • 0 years of experience required (entry-level).
