About the Role

The Medical Director for Detention Inpatient and Outpatient Services at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center – San Jose, CA, oversees psychiatric patients arrested and provides initial evaluations, treatment, and admission to the inpatient unit if necessary. This role also handles PC2603 (California Penal Code 2603) orders for involuntary medication treatment.

Responsibilities

• Provides initial evaluation, treatment, and admission to the inpatient unit for psychiatric patients arrested.
• Covers psychiatric patients arrested to provide initial evaluation, start or continue treatment, and admit to the inpatient unit if necessary.
• Access to clinical social worker to triage less acute patients when the unit becomes busy.
• Filing PC2603 petitions on patients refusing medications that are DTS, DTO, or GD.
• Presenting in court and testifying as an expert witness about the need for involuntary medication treatment.
• Following up regularly with patients that are pending PC2603 or have already had PC2603 granted and are actively under involuntary medication treatment.
• Preparing declarations every 30-60 days advocating for the need to continue the involuntary medication order or not.

Requirements

Requires a medical degree, psychiatry residency, and board certification in psychiatry. Experience in forensic psychiatry and working with mentally ill individuals in detention settings is preferred.
