Staff Optometrist

About the role

The C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center Surgical Care Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Optometrist. Our ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. Positions are located in Port Charlotte and Cape Coral locations.

Responsibilities

• Examining vision, eye, and related structures to determine the presence of vision anomalies, disease, and/or other abnormalities.
• Treating eye conditions by prescribing and adapting spectacle lenses, contact lenses, optical aids, etc.
• Referring patients to other health professionals for further diagnosis and treatments.
• Ordering and evaluating diagnostic tests as appropriate, recommending treatment an/or referral.
• Determining and managing refractive conditions, binocular functions, ocular diseases and conditions, ocular complications of systemic disease, etc.
• Interpreting diseases and conditions of the eye and adnexa and ocular manifestations of systemic disease.
• Ordering, verifying, dispensing and adjustment of optical aids for visually impaired patients.
• Referring patients to ophthalmology for diagnosis, treatment and management of systemic and ocular conditions revealed through optometric examinations.
• Conducting clinical evaluations such as: medical & ocular history; visual acuity measurement; pupillary function testing; color vision testing; extraocular muscle function & binocularity testing; refractive & accommodative testing; external examination of the eye & adnexal structures; biomicroscopic evaluation of the ocular adnexa, anterior, and/or posterior segments of the eye, including gonioscopic & fundus lens evaluation; ophthalmoscopic, tonometric, & perimetric evaluations; etc.

Requirements

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and a recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized.
