Staff Optometrist

The West Palm Beach VA Healthcare is seeking an experienced and dynamic Optometrist. Responsibilities

• Demonstrate advanced competencies and skills in providing diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic health
• Diagnose the full range of complex ophthalmic conditions
• Plan and execute necessary treatment programs
• Integrate eye care service with other professionals
• Work closely with both Optometry and Ophthalmology to provide eye care to veterans
• Contribute to the teaching, supervising, and administration of optometric externship programs
• Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up, and clinic intervention, including patient assessment, health history, physical examination, and patient education to veterans
• Order and evaluate diagnostic tests as appropriate, recommend treatment and/or referral
• Validate the effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment
• Record/document health appraisal information, clinical assessments, treatment decisions, plan of care, ongoing management, and therapeutic outcomes
• Order medications, diagnostic tests, and referral consultations where needed for every patient encounter
• Conduct routine eye exams
• Prescribe glasses and manage various ocular conditions prevalent in a hospital-based eye clinic, including diabetes, macular degeneration, and glaucoma
• Interpret diseases and conditions of the eye and adnexa and ocular manifestations of systemic disease
• Order, verify, dispense, and adjust optical aids for visually impaired patients

Requirements

• Must have a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• Approved residencies include those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
• One year of post-medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States
• Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the position they are applying for
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs)
• Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
• Exceptional circumstances may allow for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications warrant such action
