About the role

This is a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the evaluations and treatment of SIU Plastics and Vascular patients. The primary responsibility is to ensure safe, quality, efficient health care delivery by serving as a patient service coordinator within the Departments and providing direct nursing services and support for surgeons.

This position is on-site only.

Responsibilities

  • Hospital Duties (20%)
    • Demonstrates commitment to the mission and behavioral standards of SIU School of Medicine.
    • Provides excellent service through collaboration, compassion, integrity, and accountability.
    • Interviews patients and families to assess dynamics, needs, and contributing factors to illness; guides staff in patient teaching.
    • Coordinates operative needs for joint patients, including scheduling, authorizing, and communicating procedures.
    • Manages discharge coordination and follow-up outpatient services across multiple specialties.
    • Facilitates scheduling and performance of tests and procedures across SIU departments and affiliated institutions.
    • Provides follow-up care with attending physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant, including wound inspections and dressing changes.
    • Arranges nurse visits for post-operative assessments.
  • Nursing Clinic Duties (50%)
    • Acts as a liaison between healthcare facilities and specialty agencies.
    • Coordinates clinical care for shared Plastics and Vascular Surgery patients, including scheduling, authorizing testing, and triaging concerns.
    • Provides clinic nursing care, such as obtaining patient histories, assisting with examinations, administering medications, and performing wound care.
    • Assists with procedures under the direction of MD, APN, or PA.
    • Develops and implements patient care plans with the medical team.
    • Supports clinical efforts through patient/family teaching, clinical management, and discharge planning.
    • Schedules follow-up activities, including radiology studies and surgical procedures.
    • Prepares for clinics by obtaining patient history, radiologic studies, lab results, and operative reports.
    • Communicates with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
    • Uses critical thinking to triage patient care priorities.
    • Ensures safe and accurate nursing procedures through supervision of clinical personnel.
    • Serves as a resource for SIU staff regarding Plastics & Vascular patients.
  • Education (10%)
    • Provides patient teaching and participates in staff and community education programs.
    • Serves as a resource for the general public and staff.
    • Assists with preparation of educational presentations.
  • Administrative Duties (10%)
    • Ensures tests and surgeries are precertified according to insurance requirements.
    • Participates in developing policies, procedures, and systems to support patient safety and quality care.
    • Maintains or delegates inventory of clinic supplies and recommends equipment or non-routine supplies.
    • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
    • Maintains close communication with surgeons as needed.
  • Research Duties (5%)
    • Assists with planning and implementing research projects related to patient care.
    • Follows research protocols, including obtaining informed consent and documenting patient care.
    • Collects and analyzes data; assists with publishing results.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the role.

Requirements

Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

Conditions of Employment

Out-of-state applicants hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
