Staff Nurse, Medical/Surgical Services, Medical Oncology - H Yellow

About the role

The Staff Nurse is accountable for the care activities, safety, and goal achievements of assigned patients. Responsibilities include assessing, diagnosing, planning, and intervening in actual or potential health problems, as well as evaluating the patient’s response to care. The role also involves patient education and discharge planning, with an emphasis on mobilizing patients and preventing skin breakdown and falls. The Staff Nurse collaborates with a designated care team to plan and deliver patient care in a safe environment, ensuring goals are met according to the patient’s developmental stage and cultural expectations.

Competent practice is demonstrated through patient/family goal achievement, satisfaction, and thorough documentation in accordance with American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Practice, Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organization Standards, Patient/Family Centered Principles, Department of Health Standards, and University Hospital Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose, plan, and intervene in actual or potential health problems for assigned patients.
• Evaluate patient responses to care and adjust plans as needed.
• Provide patient education and coordinate discharge planning.
• Mobilize patients and implement measures to prevent skin breakdown and falls.
• Collaborate with a care team to plan and deliver safe, goal-oriented patient care.
• Guide team members in achieving patient care goals.
• Document care and services in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
• Exemplify behavioral expectations and uphold the Nursing Department Philosophy.

Requirements

• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
• Chemotherapy Certification for Oncology Nurses required (must obtain within one year if not certified at hire).
• BLS certification required.
• Phlebotomy Certification or IV Certification required.
• Successful completion of a Progressive Care Course or Progressive Care Certification.
• Proficiency in the English language.

Qualifications

• Adult Medical/Surgical experience preferred.
• Ability to employ problem-solving techniques and critical thinking.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Ability to organize care and activities for multiple patients.
