Staff Nurse

We are seeking an Oncology Registered Nurse focused on patient assessment, education, care coordination, therapy administration, symptom management, and supportive care for Oncology and Hematology patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

About the role

The Registered Nurse cares for individuals receiving therapy for oncologic and hematologic problems. Responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The role encompasses chemotherapy and medication administration, telephone nursing, direct patient care, and charge capture/billing. The nurse provides patient and family education, psychosocial and emotional support, and collaborates with a multidisciplinary care team.

Responsibilities

• Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care using the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Assesses patient and family needs, promotes health outcomes, and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members.
• Plans and implements care, evaluates patient responses, and documents according to institutional and regulatory requirements.
• Administers medications, treatments (including chemotherapy), and procedures safely and efficiently, adhering to Institute policy.
• Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patients and families, incorporating them into the care plan.
• Educates patients and families on disease treatment modalities, symptom management, and chemotherapy/radiation therapy.
• Reviews patient clinical status and laboratory values pre-treatment, consulting with providers as needed.
• Makes appropriate referrals to interdisciplinary team members and community resources.
• Manages patient care across the continuum, including referrals to home care and hospice.
• Prepares and administers chemotherapy/biotherapy and supportive therapy following ASCO/ONS Guidelines.
• Recognizes and responds to emergencies; maintains BLS certification.
• Provides telephone triage and documents interactions according to policies.
• Performs technical skills including IV therapy, vascular access, safe handling of hazardous agents, and chemotherapy administration.
• Complies with professional nursing standards, licensure requirements, and institutional policies.
• Accurately records charges for services rendered and collaborates on supply inventory.
• Serves as a resource for external healthcare professionals to promote optimal Oncology practices.
• Establishes rapport with diverse patients and families, providing culturally sensitive and age-specific care.
• Monitors and manages the patient care environment, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
• Works collaboratively as an effective team member, demonstrating communication, conflict management, and delegation skills.
• May function as charge nurse, coordinating patient flow and supervising assistive personnel.
• Participates in committees, councils, QA/QI projects, and accepts additional responsibilities as needed.
• Seeks professional growth through goal-setting, continuing education, mentorship, and active membership in professional organizations.

Requirements

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or New Hampshire.
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing strongly preferred; associate degree candidates must complete BSN within 4 years.
• Completion of the Oncology Nurse Residency Program (ONRP) or 1 year of recent RN experience.
• Ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred.
• AHA BLS certification required (AHA ACLS acceptable as minimum).
• Professional nursing certification (e.g., OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN-BC) preferred.

Schedule

36 hours per week.

Pay

$82,367.58 - $124,614.60, based on market pay structures, experience, skills, and qualifications.
