About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a crucial role in developing, documenting, and validating new product designs for Intuitive's da Vinci SP instruments. This position requires a deep understanding of small mechanism design, plastics, and disposable medical products, along with proficiency in CAD tools like SolidWorks.

Responsibilities

  • Drive design efforts to optimize performance, manufacturability, and reliability of existing and future Da Vinci SP instruments.
  • Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing Engineers, Systems Engineers, Systems Analysts, Clinical Development engineers, and Supplier Engineers to ensure seamless integration and compliance.
  • Maintain awareness of customer needs and requirements, developing new device concepts and continuously improving existing designs to meet those needs.
  • Create product functional and design specifications, analyze and test product designs, develop vendors to manufacture components, and develop initial fixtures and processes to assemble components.
  • Develop product assembly instructions, conduct component verification testing, and perform product validation testing.
  • Support production of final products by troubleshooting process and component problems, and provide engineering support to Manufacturing, Materials, Test Engineering, and Service.
  • Develop Design History Files per FDA requirements, investigate and establish root cause of both latent and emerging design, manufacturing, or material defects, and develop, implement, test, and document solutions for these opportunities according to corporate standards and departmental operating procedures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 years of experience preferred, with minimum BSME required and MSME preferred.
  • Experience with small mechanism design, plastics, and/or disposable medical products is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms, particularly SolidWorks.
  • Good communication and documentation skills, mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials, and stress analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including injection molding, machining, MIM, heat treatment).
  • Experience with designing hardware products in a regulated industry for mission-critical applications, comfort with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis.
