Staff Backend Engineer - Second Horizon | Canada | Remote

About the role

This role will lead work at the intersection of data, AI-enabled capabilities, and scalable technology delivery, working across engineering, product, operations, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into practical technology solutions.

The position offers the opportunity to influence architecture, execution quality, and the technology capabilities that enable long-term growth within a Technical Services environment.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available. Compensation: $186,368 – $223,642 annually.

Responsibilities

• Build core backend services for context ingestion and indexing
• Create scalable architecture for a multi-tenant service
• Develop APIs for AI agent integrations and internal applications
• Collaborate with teams to balance fast iteration and long-term reliability
• Instrument services for monitoring and reliability improvements
• Shape the architecture and engineering practices for a new product area
• Take ownership of AI solutions and ensure real-user alignment

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly with production-grade systems
• Strong understanding of AI technologies and GenAI frameworks
• Experience in cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Background in using observability tools for system behavior analysis
• Demonstrated ability to deliver user-facing applications to production
