Staff Attorney Supervisor

About the role
The Cannabis Expungement Board (CEB) is a new state board established to review felony cannabis-related convictions for expungement or resentencing. This position is a member of the CEB leadership team and plays a key role in creating and executing the legal and procedural framework of the Board.
The Staff Attorney Supervisor provides direct oversight of one staff attorney and three Paralegal Supervisors, oversees the Paralegal Supervisors’ direct reports, and coordinates with the rest of the legal team—including Managing Attorneys and their direct reports—who perform complex legal research and analysis to advance the agency’s goals. The position also provides legal expertise to the agency and Board on expungement and litigation strategy, specifically in criminal law, and applies expertise when making expungement recommendations consistent with applicable laws and the impact of potential Board actions.
Responsibilities
- Supervise a staff attorney and three Paralegal Supervisors, including oversight of their direct reports.
- Coordinate with Managing Attorneys and their teams to advance the agency’s legal and procedural objectives.
- Provide legal expertise on expungement and litigation strategy in criminal law.
- Analyze and make recommendations for expungement in accordance with applicable laws and Board priorities.
- Develop and implement the legal and procedural framework for the Cannabis Expungement Board.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- Licensed to practice law in Minnesota.
- Three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney in criminal law or prosecution.
- Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g., supervisor, lead worker, team lead, project lead, or completion of a State of Minnesota leadership program such as ELI or SLI, or comparable program).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in criminal justice and expungement law.
- Experience as a criminal prosecutor and/or defender.
- Public-sector experience managing or leading agency strategic initiatives, operations, budgets, or personnel.
- Experience planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing, and reporting on program objectives.
- Experience interpreting government rules, regulations, and laws, including the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.
- Experience implementing or monitoring compliance with data practices/data privacy requirements.
- Experience with the legislative process.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with public and private organizations, special interest groups, elected and appointed officials.
- Strong team-building skills, including superior communication, written, and public speaking abilities.
- Well-established negotiation skills and an aptitude for building consensus through cooperation and coalition-building.

Pay
$48.44 – $69.21 hourly / $101,142 – $144,510 annually.
Schedule
Day shift, Monday – Friday.
