Staff Attorney

For over 50 years, we have been serving low-to-moderate-income individuals and families in New York City and are dedicated to offering top-notch, accessible legal services within local neighborhoods. We primarily assist clients who reside in neighborhoods experiencing rapid gentrification, where many residents and small business owners are dealing with displacement and harassment issues.

About the role

Due to growth and demand, we are looking to add a Staff Attorney to our expanding team.

Responsibilities

• Work with clients in the Nonprofit Sector, Low-Income Tenant Groups on affordable housing, eviction prevention, tenant harassment/discrimination, and ensuring working families, individuals, older adults, and others live in stable environments
• Demonstrate an understanding of the City's housing market and/or experience in housing law practice
• Interact effectively with clients/tenants of different races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment
• Work independently with strong motivation, manage a high caseload, meet deadlines, and be flexible
• Collaborate with program managers and development team to write narrative reports for grants and contracts
• Attend meetings and perform administrative tasks related to the work, such as timekeeping and case notes
• Handle motion practice, discovery, depositions, communication with clients, negotiations with opposing counsel, and advocacy with outside agencies on behalf of clients

Requirements

• Admission to the Bar of the State of New York
• Juris Doctor Degree from an American Bar Association-Accredited Law School
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Bilingual Spanish/English is highly preferred
• Currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship for a non-immigrant visa
