About the role

A staff attorney in the Health, Education & Family Services Division handles routine legal assignments and occasionally more complex matters with multiple variables. The employee keeps clients and supervisors informed about the status of all assigned matters.

Responsibilities

  • Draft formal and informal legal opinions under supervision.
  • Provide legal representation to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan Department of Education, Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential, and Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, as well as their agencies, commissions, boards, and staff.
  • Handle administrative proceedings and civil litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate courts.
  • Represent state officials and employees.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Membership in good standing in the Michigan State Bar.

Qualifications

  • Attorney-Staff P15: No specific type or amount of legal experience required.
  • Attorney-Senior 16: Four years of post-bar admission legal experience.
