About the role

A staff attorney in the Health, Education & Family Services Division handles routine legal assignments and occasionally more complex matters with multiple variables. The attorney keeps clients and supervisors informed of case status and, under supervision, drafts legal opinions and provides representation to several Michigan departments and related agencies, commissions, and boards.

Representation includes administrative proceedings, civil litigation in state and federal courts (including appellate courts), and representation of state officials and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Handle routine and occasionally complex legal assignments.
  • Keep clients and supervisors updated on the status of all matters.
  • Draft formal and informal legal opinions under supervision.
  • Provide legal representation to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan Department of Education, Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential, and Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, as well as related agencies, commissions, boards, and staff.
  • Represent clients in administrative proceedings and civil litigation in state and federal courts, including appellate courts.
  • Represent state officials and employees.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Membership in good standing in the Michigan State Bar.

Qualifications

  • Attorney-Staff P15: No specific type or amount of legal experience is required.
  • Attorney-Senior 16: Four years of post-bar admission legal experience.
