About the role
This position is assigned to the General Litigation section, the Western District team, of the Corrections Division and primarily handles the defense of civil rights cases filed against the Michigan Department of Corrections, its agencies, boards, commissions, officers and employees including representation in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals.
Responsibilities
- Defend civil rights cases filed against the Michigan Department of Corrections, its agencies, boards, commissions, officers and employees in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals.
- Represent clients in various legal proceedings.
- Prepare and present legal arguments and evidence in court and before administrative bodies.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support case strategies.
- Collaborate with other attorneys and legal staff to develop comprehensive legal strategies.
- Manage caseloads and prioritize cases based on complexity and urgency.
Requirements
- Education: Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
- Experience: Attorney-Staff P15 - No specific type or amount is required. Attorney-Senior 16 - Four years of post-bar admission legal experience.
Qualifications
- Membership in good standing in the Michigan State Bar.
Skills

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in legal research and document preparation.
