About the role
Handles complex legal assignments and cases involving employment related litigation for MDOC, MDHHS and other client agencies, constitutional litigation, and other assigned issues and claims, under the general supervision of the Division Chief, the First Assistant, or Section Head.
Responsibilities
- Drafts formal and informal legal opinions
- Provides day-to-day legal representation to various state agencies, boards, commissions, officers and employees including representation in state and federal administrative proceedings and courts
- Provides general legal advice to the client agency in other non-litigation matters
- Handles a larger and more complex caseload involving multiple legal/factual issues, novel interpretation of state or federal statutes, unique case law, constitutional challenges, significant fiscal consequences, and sophisticated burdens of proof
- Develops and implements strategies pertaining to litigation
- Conducts extensive discovery and other pretrial practice
- Conducts pretrial motion practice
- Develops trial strategies and tries jury and non-jury trials
- Conducts post-trial motion practice
- Prepares and responds to appeals and presents oral arguments before state and federal courts of appeal
Qualifications
Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
Experience
- Attorney-Staff P15: No specific type or amount is required
- Attorney-Senior 16: Four years of post-bar admission legal experience
Requirements
Membership in good standing in the Michigan State Bar.
