Position overview

We are seeking a versatile Staff Architect to join our residential design studio. This role is intentionally broad; depending on experience, you may serve anywhere from Project Architect to Lead Architect, owning design and documentation on custom homes and high-end remodels. You will work closely with our interior design team, builders, and clients throughout the design process, producing thoughtful, well-coordinated work from schematic concepts through permit sets and construction administration. We will scope responsibilities to match your strengths, with room to take on more as you grow.

Responsibilities

  • Design Development: Develop design concepts and refine them through schematic design, design development, and construction documents.
  • Documentation & Detailing: Produce accurate, well-coordinated drawing sets, details, and specifications that are both beautiful and buildable.
  • Client & Team Collaboration: Partner with clients, interior designers, and builders to align on design intent, budget, and schedule.
  • Coordination: Coordinate with structural, mechanical, and civil consultants to ensure complete, conflict-free documents.
  • Code & Permitting: Ensure designs meet applicable building codes and zoning requirements; support permit submittals and approvals.
  • Construction Administration: Respond to RFIs, review submittals, and conduct site visits to ensure the built work reflects the design.
  • Mentorship & Studio Culture: Mentor junior staff (for senior-level candidates) and contribute to a positive, collaborative studio environment.

Requirements

  • Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch).
  • Licensure or active pursuit of licensure preferred.
  • Range of experience welcomed, from a few years of residential project work (Project Architect) to a seasoned designer ready to lead (Lead Architect).
  • Strong knowledge of residential construction methods, detailing, codes, and the documentation process.
  • Proficiency in current architectural software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp) and a strong design sensibility.

Benefits

  • Liberal PTO policy
  • Medical insurance with 80% coverage for employee-only plans (family coverage paid by employee)
  • 401k plan with a 3% company match
  • Mileage reimbursement

Personal characteristics

  • Design Talent: A strong eye for proportion, detail, and craft in residential design.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and graphic communication skills for client and team interactions.
  • Organization: Detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Initiative: Self-directed, with the judgment to know when to lead and when to collaborate.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to visit and navigate construction sites, including climbing ladders and scaffolding.
  • Core Values: Alignment with our core values in all aspects of work.
