About the role

The Staff Accountant III is responsible for performing complex general ledger accounting activities, financial reporting, and reconciliations. This position serves as a key resource for process improvement and provides guidance to Staff Accountants and support to accounting staff and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Reconciliation: Performs complex reconciliations, analysis, and financial reporting. Leads portions of the month-end and year-end close process, including but not limited to, close related documentation efforts and the review, preparation, and maintenance of supporting records. Reviews general ledger data monthly for improper coding and prepares adjusting journal entries to be approved by the Treasury & GL Manager. Analyzes financial results and provides insights to management.

  • Auditing & Compliance: Ensures all work adheres to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal policies. Assists with internal and external auditing requirements to include research, data collection, and saving source support. Receives feedback from the internal Tax and Audit team regarding any discrepancies or action items and corrects entries as appropriate. Collaborates with the Fixed Asset Accountant to ensure that the fixed account aligns with the general ledger. Reviews accounting transactions prepared by other Staff Accountants for accuracy and completeness. Ensures consistent audit readiness of the general ledger information and journal entries.

  • Process Improvement & Leadership: Serves as a resource and provides guidance to Staff Accountants regarding month end, year-end, audit process and document support requirements. Creates and develops best practices for role and department supported objectives to include processes for new or more complex transactions or accounts. Evaluates processes for automation opportunities and facilitates implementation of solutions. 5% Assists with any special projects or tasks assigned by supervisor, which could include items such as assisting other accounting groups with reconciliations and assisting with additional information requests from the Controller and CFO.

Requirements

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Accounting, Finance, or other business related field and four to six years relevant experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience can be used in lieu of this education and experience requirement. Experience with complex reconciliations and supporting audits or external reporting requirements required. Experience driving process improvement or automation initiatives required. Experience with mentoring or coaching team members preferred. Interest in pursuing professional certification (ex: Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional, Certified Management Accountant, etc.) preferred.

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present financial information and insights to both financial and non-financial stakeholders. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills to support internal and external customers. Able to work collaboratively across departments and provide guidance to team members. Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, especially for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end processes, while managing multiple priorities. Strong ability to interpret and analyze financial data, including variance analysis and complex account reconciliations, to identify trends and discrepancies. Able to identify and pursue opportunities for process improvement and increased department efficiency. Demonstrated ability to calculate figures like discounts, interest, and percentages. Thorough understanding of GAAP and the ability to apply these principles in complex accounting scenarios. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Proficient with Modular based Accounting Software, Spreadsheets and Word Processing software. Proficient with using ERP systems for efficient management of accounting tasks.

Office environment with a moderate noise level.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to frequently sit. Must be able to use hands or fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; must be able to reach with hands and arms. Manual dexterity associated with computer data entry required. Must be able to talk and hear. Close vision required.
