Job Summary

At Island Health, the Staff Accountant II plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's mission to care for those who care for others. This position involves maintaining and controlling the General Ledger accounts, updating the Cost Accounting System, and performing various financial tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Controller with day-to-day, monthly, and year-end operations of the Accounting/Finance Department, including reporting and budget review and analysis.
  • Updates and maintains the Cost Accounting system as needed and provides reports to management as requested.
  • Reviews source documents such as vouchers, invoices, and miscellaneous cash receipts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with policies.
  • Performs general accounts analysis and reconciliations, including bank statements, accruals, and prepaid expenses.
  • Prepares the monthly budget to actual variance reports for departments.
  • Compiles and prepares business and tax returns.
  • Aids the Controller and Finance Team with daily, monthly, and year-end operations of the Finance Department as needed or assigned.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all sensitive pay records and finance-related information.
  • Interacts positively with Administration, Directors, Managers, Supervisors, peers, coworkers, subordinates, patients, and visitors.
  • Supports the Payroll Coordinator to complete bi-weekly payroll, including reviewing employee timecards for accuracy and compliance with established policy, procedures, and collective bargaining agreement guidelines.
  • Prepares balancing reports for biweekly payroll and processes, calculates, and posts a variety of payroll actions including wage garnishments, payroll liability claims, and overtime reports.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five (5) years of previous accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting or public entity.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload under tight deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to details and good record-keeping.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, especially Excel).
  • Hands-on detail-oriented tasks and team player with interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to use applicable information technology and systems to meet work needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly communicate issues to all levels of management.
