About the role
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records with a primary focus on account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting the month-end close process. This role plays a key part in ensuring the general ledger is accurate, complete, and closed on a timely basis each period.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger, ensuring accuracy, proper coding, and complete supporting documentation.
- Perform monthly account reconciliations - including bank, balance sheet, and intercompany accounts - and research and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Support the month-end close process by completing assigned tasks within established deadlines, including accruals, reconciliations, and journal entry preparation.
- Assist with the preparation of financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow) in accordance with GAAP.
- Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts, identifying and communicating variances or trends to management.
- Maintain fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
- Absorb accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
- Assist with the annual budgeting and forecasting process by gathering and analyzing financial data.
- Assist with internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules and providing supporting documentation.
- Help maintain and improve internal controls and accounting policies and procedures.
- Perform ad hoc financial analysis and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience (internship experience considered for entry-level candidates).
- Working knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, lookups) and general comfort with the Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience with an ERP or accounting system (e.g., SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, or QuickBooks).
- CPA license or active CPA candidate.
- Experience in [industry, e.g., manufacturing, healthcare, real estate].
- Exposure to month-end close and financial statement preparation.
