Staff Accountant

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare month-end close activities, including compiling and analyzing account information
• Maintain an authentic and growing walk with Jesus Christ through the ongoing spiritual disciplines of Bible reading, prayer, personal worship, fasting, confession and fellowship
• Post and process journal entries to ensure all transactions are accurately recorded
• Oversee subsidiary accounting for an affiliated entity, supporting accounts receivable activities, journal entries, and invoicing while maintaining strong accounting controls
• Serve as the backup for Accounts Payable and Giving functions
• Support daily accounting operations, including cash receipts, disbursements and general ledger activities
• Collaborate and assist with accounting projects, including system and process improvements and giving-platform support as needed
• Prepare and file all required 1099 forms in compliance with federal reporting requirements
• Investigate and resolve reconciling items and variances
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, church policies and internal controls
• Maintain staff confidence and protect operations by keeping all financial information confidential

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance strongly preferred
• Two to four years of accounting experience with a solid understanding of the field’s core concepts, practices and procedures; experience with financial systems, budgeting, financial reporting, data analysis and auditing is preferred (non-profit experience a plus)

Expected Hours of Work

• Work Hours Expectations: 40 hours or more
• Schedule Expectations: Monday through Friday; hours may vary based on church needs

Work Environment/Physical Demands

• Operates in a professional office environment
• Regularly uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers
• Requires periods of extended sitting and screen time

Ministerial Exception

• The ministerial exception furthers the purposes of the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses of the First Amendment by barring legal claims against church bodies by staff members who perform religious functions.
• All church pastors are subject to the exception, but a formal ministerial credential is not required.
• Variety of factors are considered to determine which staff members are subject to the ministerial exception (please see handbook).
