Job Summary
The Full-time Staff Accountant is responsible for managing and maintaining the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District's fixed asset accounting lifecycle, including maintenance of the fixed asset database, recording asset activity, and calculating depreciation. This position supports payroll and benefit-related financial functions, performs general ledger reconciliations, and carries out project accounting duties.
Minimum Education Qualification
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or other closely related field, plus two (2) years of relevant experience.
- Education may not be substituted for the required relevant experience.
- CPA Preferred.
Essential Functions
- Maintain and update the capital asset database to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with GASB standards.
- Calculate and record annual and periodic depreciation for assets.
- Reconcile assigned fixed asset general ledger accounts monthly.
- Cook with GIS to align asset locations, classifications, and costs.
- Aid in the creation of the annual capital asset budget.
- Process engineering payment applications timely and accurately with proper documentation.
- Reconcile engineering project cost summaries.
- Maintain appropriate supporting documentation according to retention schedules.
- Support payroll and benefit related financial functions, including reconciliation of payroll-related accounting data.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely resolution of reconciling items.
- Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts monthly.
- Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation as required.
- Support the Accounts Payable function, including review of invoices for asset-related coding.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of accounting principles relating to Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements.
- Understanding of fixed asset accounting principles under GASB.
- Payroll processing systems and payroll-related accounting.
- Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP formulas, pivot tables, and reconciliation techniques.
- Effective communication methods and public relations.
- Utah Code Annotated and related state and federal rules and policies.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- This position requires work in a wide variety of conditions, from a typical office setting to field work.
- Must be able to attend some evening meetings.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, move, talk, and hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
