About the role
The Staff Accountant is responsible for the timely, accurate and consistent preparation and review of accounting work papers and financial analysis. The role assists the Director of Finance with compliance and performs various accounting tasks including regulatory accounting entries, special government reporting requirements, and general ledger reconciliations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual journal entries and account reconciliations for assigned accounts, ensuring all activity is recorded, adjustments are calculated and corrections are made timely and accurately.
- Provide detailed analysis of various general ledger accounts and selected cost centers as assigned to analyze trends, identify variances and make recommendations for change.
- Research and interpret changes in accounting and financial reporting policy while applying observations and recommendations to operations.
- Research and understand changes in the regulatory environment and provide potential impact to the Authority through data analysis.
- Perform monthly operating reviews with the department managers to assist with recommendations on improving margins.
- Assess, modify, develop and implement more effective processes and/or systems to increase efficiency, accuracy and meaningfulness of information with minimal to no direction.
- Assist senior accountant with Foundation accounting, a non-profit organization that adheres to GAAP standards for Fund based accounting and also includes fund tracking, grant disbursements, donor-restricted assets, financial reporting, and compliance with applicable nonprofit regulations.
- Exhibit strong critical-thinking abilities, interpersonal skills, and technical expertise, consistently improving data capture, analysis, organization, and automation.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks, adopting and implementing industry best practices and participating in professional organizations.
- Operate as a self-directed professional with the ability to manage ambiguity and adapt quickly to shifting priorities and business conditions.
- Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors and employees.
- Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors and employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in accounting, finance or business required.
- Two to four years of accounting experience is required.
- Advanced Excel skills are required.
- CPA preferred.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations.
- Understanding of GAAP and GASB accounting standards.
- Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication, collaboration & analytical skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls, financial and statistical analysis techniques and report design through the use of report writers, spreadsheets and database software.
- Advanced analytical and financial modeling skills.
- Operational finance experience, strong cost accounting understanding, and working knowledge of purchasing processes.
