Job Description

You will be the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) Tool Designer for the Propulsion Tooling Engineering team. Our team creates and refines the composite, insulation, casting, assembly and test tooling that enables safe, reliable manufacturing of solid rocket motors and other energetic material systems.

What You Will Be Doing

  • As the SRM Tool Designer you will serve as the subject matter expert for tooling projects, applying physics and material science principles to develop, analyze and validate tooling that handles propellants, pyrotechnics and explosives.
  • You will lead design, troubleshoot anomalies, and produce technical documentation while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineers to meet stringent program requirements.
  • Your responsibilities will include:
    • Design and supervise development of composite, insulation, casting, assembly and test tooling for SRM manufacturing.
    • Apply material science and physics knowledge to ensure safe tooling practices for propellants, pyrotechnics and explosives.
    • Develop analytical methods and test rigs that account for thermal expansion, cure shrinkage and mechanical deformation, modifying geometries to achieve target performance.
    • Lead troubleshooting activities: identify, isolate and correct processing or product anomalies using physics based analysis techniques.
    • Prepare SRM case preparation tooling (cleaning, abrading, lining) and design fixtures for assembly of closures, nozzles, ignition systems and final motor integration.
    • Design lifting, handling and processing fixtures for explosive items and develop hazardous shipping requirements and containers for energetic assemblies.
    • Produce clear technical reports, proposals, publications and presentation decks that communicate design rationale, test results and risk assessments.
    • Coordinate with structures, materials, propulsion and test teams to ensure tooling integrates smoothly with overall motor development schedules.
    • Maintain configuration control and documentation in accordance with aerospace and safety standards.
