Sr. Transportation Design Engineer

The Transportation Senior Design Engineer is responsible for technical assignments, technical production, and managing the general production of technical documents such as Right-of-Way Improvements Plans (Roadway Widening, Intersection Widening, ADA Improvements, Traffic Signal Installation, etc.). This position collaborates with municipal, county, and state agencies, developers, architects, planners, and project teams on projects including commercial developments, residential communities, mixed-use developments, warehouses, retail centers, roadway improvements, complete streets initiatives, and transportation infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical tasks to facilitate the successful completion of projects within specified deadlines.
- Work with the Project Manager in developing work products and maintaining project objectives, timelines, goals, and budgets.
- Review transportation agency standards to determine project constraints and develop construction cost estimates.
- Research and coordinate transportation projects with utilities as needed.
- Conduct project-related communications with clients and reviewing jurisdictions.
- Provide technical assistance and quality control oversight on traffic engineering projects during the conceptual development stage.
- Support other divisions of the company with transportation engineering needs.
- Serve as the technical liaison with clients and coordinate technical efforts within the traffic engineering discipline.
- Lead and direct sub-consultants as needed.
- Prepare technical reports such as Drainage Reports, Design Exception Reports, and others.
- Mentor junior engineering staff and provide quality control reviews of engineering deliverables.
- Produce plans including construction plans, grading plans, drainage plans, profiles, cross sections, signing and striping plans, ADA curb ramp plans, traffic signal and electrical plans, and other items as needed.
- Perform construction support and field investigations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in traffic/transportation engineering.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification required; working towards Professional Engineer (PE) licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain and operate a personal and/or company vehicle.
Skills
- Proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D and related design software.
- Strong knowledge of traffic engineering principles, transportation planning, and roadway design standards.
- Proficient in designing traffic signals, signing and striping plans, Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) plans, roadway geometry, and intersection improvements.
- Knowledge of MUTCD standards and applicable state transportation agency design manuals.
- Understanding of complete streets, pedestrian and bicycle facility design, ADA compliance, and multimodal transportation planning.
- Experience working with municipal agencies, county engineering departments, state Departments of Transportation, and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project) and Bluebeam Revu and/or Adobe Acrobat for engineering document review and markup.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary project teams.
