About the role
Assists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Technicians may prepare sterile products and chemotherapy, be responsible for controlled substance distribution, or other specialize duties within the pharmacy.
Responsibilities
- Reads physicians' orders and prepares medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
- Interprets lists and uses this information to replenish patient's medications and delivers contents to patient care areas according to schedule.
- Takes inventory and analyzes medication supplies, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications; replaces depleted inventory.
- Labels products appropriately.
- Performs arithmetic calculations for usual dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
- Performs initial check for prescribed doses for appropriateness based on weight and age.
- Maintains inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
- Answers telephone and channels calls to appropriate individual.
- Ensures that the pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas in the institution are kept clean and orderly.
- Assists in the training of pharmacy technicians.
- Participates on safety or quality improvement projects for the department and/or organization.
- Acts as an active member of a department or hospital committee.
- Prepares and labels prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements.
- Manages controlled substances for the health-system.
- Schedules weekly hours of 20.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or Equivalent.
- Current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: MD: Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Student Permit through Maryland Board of Pharmacy, OH: Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy, PA: Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee License through the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy, WV: Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
- Remote Workers Only: Must additionally hold Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Trainee License issued by state of residence.
- Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
- Four (4) year's pharmacy technician or healthcare experience.
- Associates degree OR Post high school education in a science field of study OR graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
Qualifications
