Sr. Service Field Tech - Power Systems Field Tech, II, III, or IV
Location: Baton Rouge, LA • Full-Time • $40-$65/hour plus overtime eligibility • 30-50% travel • Relocation assistance available for highly qualified candidates
About the role
RESA Power is seeking experienced Sr. Service Field Technicians / NETA Technicians to perform testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning, and repair of electrical power distribution equipment. This role supports low, medium, and high-voltage electrical systems and requires strong technical expertise in electrical testing, safety compliance, and customer service.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, commission, and maintain electrical power systems from low voltage through high voltage (up to 500 kV).
- Perform testing, maintenance, reconditioning, and repair of:
- Switchgear
- Circuit breakers
- Transformers
- MCCs (Motor Control Centers)
- Protective relays
- Cables and power distribution systems
- Conduct acceptance and maintenance testing of electrical equipment in accordance with NETA standards.
- Perform transformer testing on dry-type and oil-filled units ranging from 45 kVA to 130 MVA.
- Execute breaker testing and maintenance on low and medium voltage equipment.
- Troubleshoot controls, transfer schemes, and electrical protection systems.
- Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.
- Operate electrical testing equipment including Doble power factor test sets and similar diagnostic tools.
- Perform switchgear startup, commissioning, and energization activities.
- Evaluate test results and prepare detailed service reports.
- Support emergency response activities and participate in on-call rotations.
- Ensure compliance with NETA, NFPA, NEC, OSHA, and all applicable safety regulations.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 2-5+ years of electrical testing, commissioning, maintenance, or field service experience.
- Experience working with electrical distribution equipment including switchgear, transformers, breakers, MCCs, and protective relays.
- Knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, NEC, and NETA standards.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work safely around energized electrical equipment.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- NETA Certification (Level II, III, or IV).
- Experience with:
- Relay testing
- Oil testing
- Infrared thermography
- Switchgear startup and commissioning
- SF6 and GIS equipment
- Power factor testing
- Military electrical power experience (Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, Navy Nuclear/Electrical Programs, or related fields).
Certification Levels
- NETA Level II
- 2+ years of experience.
- Performs testing and service work under general supervision.
- Understands electrical safety procedures, arc flash hazards, and lockout/tagout requirements.
- NETA Level III
- 5+ years of experience.
- NETA Level III Certification.
- Leads and mentors junior technicians.
- Evaluates test results, manages routine projects, and performs electrical switching activities.
- NETA Level IV
- Associate degree or equivalent experience and 5-10+ years of experience.
- NETA Level IV Certification.
- Leads crews and large-scale projects.
- Performs advanced investigations, testing, reporting, commissioning, and project oversight.
- Senior Service Field Technician
- 5+ years of related experience.
- Extensive experience with high-voltage equipment through 230 kV and above.
- Ability to independently execute projects, complete reports, and support customers in complex field environments.
