About the role
Join the dedicated Same Day Surgery team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where you’ll play a critical role in both the preoperative and postoperative phases of a child’s surgical experience. In partnership with our anesthesia and surgical teams, you’ll provide compassionate, high-quality care that supports exceptional patient experiences and optimal clinical outcomes for pediatric patients and their families.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a clinical leader and role model for professional nursing practice, providing expert patient care and supporting evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Apply the nursing process within a relationship-based care model to deliver safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, develop individualized plans of care, and communicate patient needs effectively with the interdisciplinary team.
- Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to identify and address clinical, psychosocial, safety, and educational needs throughout the patient’s surgical experience.
- Promote positive patient outcomes and an exceptional patient experience through compassionate, family-focused care.
- Mentor, precept, and support the development of nursing students, new graduates, and newly hired staff.
- Participate in continuous learning, quality improvement initiatives, shared governance, and professional development activities.
- Identify opportunities to enhance patient care, operational efficiency, workplace culture, and clinical outcomes through evidence-based practice.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful work environment and build strong relationships with patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.
- Support patient safety, quality, and organizational goals while maintaining professional accountability and compliance with all UPMC policies and standards.
- Perform all duties in accordance with UPMC system-wide competencies and behaviors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of RN experience required.
- BSN preferred.
- Completion of one contribution as outlined through UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder.
- UPMC-approved nursing certification required. - Certification is not required if a Master’s in Nursing or DNP is held.
- If a BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of certification.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and interact appropriately with patients across the age groups served by the unit.
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess, interpret, and respond to age-specific patient needs.
- Obtain and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on the Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with patients, families, physicians, providers, leaders, staff, and other departments.
- Ability to work effectively in a complex environment, manage multiple priorities, and utilize specialized equipment.
- Demonstrated clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
- Physical stamina, mobility, and visual/manual dexterity required, including frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or eligibility under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire and maintained thereafter. Certification must meet AHA standards and include both didactic and skills demonstration components.

- Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
