UPMC Williamsport is seeking a Casual Senior Professional Staff Nurse II to join our Acute Care/Trauma Stepdown Unit (5E)—a dynamic 23 bed unit specializing in acute care surgery and trauma. Our team cares for patients recovering from procedures such as bowel obstruction treatment, appendectomies, and gallbladder surgeries, supported by trauma trained nurses, a mobility focused recovery model, and a strong care partner approach.

Responsibilities

  • Passionately precepts and mentors students, graduate nurses, and new hires, fostering professional growth.
  • Identifies learning opportunities from clinical and behavioral situations to improve patient care practices.
  • Sets and applies feedback for continuous professional improvement.
  • Acts as a role model and recognized unit leader in clinical expertise, teaching, specialized resources, or evidence-based practice.
  • Provides constructive feedback, participates in peer review, and promotes change that enhances patient care and unit culture.
  • Demonstrates advanced clinical assessment, critical thinking, and holistic care within the Relationship Based Care model.
  • Collaborates effectively, communicates patient conditions clearly, and ensures comprehensive documentation.
  • Integrates evidence-based practice and organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Builds positive workplace relationships, models cultural awareness, addresses workplace challenges, and maintains work-life balance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Completion of 1 contribution as set forth through UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder.
  • UPMC approved nursing certification required. Certification not required if Master’s in nursing or DNP is held. If a BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

License, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Absolute Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ACLS) required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
