Program Description

The Laboratory & Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for laboratory and animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of husbandry, veterinary, state-of-the-art technology, and pre-clinical scientific services.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

  • Investigate ways of standardizing the growth of normal (non-cancerous) human hepatic organoids.
  • Utilize hepatic organoids to model and study human disease.
  • Perform and publish independent research.
  • Initiates, directs, and executes all pre-clinical scientific research and/or development strategies.
  • Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; will direct the work of other staff members.
  • Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
  • Makes major contributions to scientific literature and conferences.
  • Solves unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business.
  • May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management.
  • May participate in development of patent applications.
  • Interfaces with various departments and serves as internal consultant.
  • Accountable for meeting own target which will impact the discipline.

Basic Qualifications

  • Possession of PhD degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, must have 10 years of direct experience in hepatic organoid biology.
  • Strong evidence of previous scientific mentoring and laboratory leadership.
  • Must possess basic Microsoft Office skills.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has directed the pre-clinical research efforts of other scientists in organoid research.
