Sr. Operations Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering Execution

Global Engineering Services (GES) North America (NA) Operations Engineering Execution (OEX) is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Sr. Operations Engineer to root cause, solve, and scale systemic engineering challenges in First and Middle Mile Operations. This role involves leading engineering projects to develop sortation and logistics systems within Amazon’s multi-national operations.

About the role

We’re looking for a high-impact operations engineer to collaborate with internal and external teams, developing, monitoring, and innovating cost-effective solutions for our sortation and distribution systems. Projects vary across building types and Lines of Business, contributing to the end-to-end Ops engineering lifecycle. You will work in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment with a team of highly skilled engineers, tackling high-impact, high-visibility projects. This role requires 80% regional travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

• Work independently with internal and external teams to manage the lifecycle of challenging projects, acting as owner in delivering on project objectives and targets. Projects may span organizations or geographies in support of business objectives.
• Actively participate in firm engineering reviews, impacting proposed solutions on individual systems, overall systems architecture, and facility processes.
• Partner with internal teams, stakeholders, and external vendors to set project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
• Proactively assess stakeholders’ dependencies and milestones, problem-solve, and drive solutions to mitigate issues.
• Lead and coordinate execution efforts in delivering systems and automated equipment designs per established standards and guidelines.
• Perform equipment/system installation, throughput, and safety qualifications.
• Simplify, optimize, remove bottlenecks, and provide feedback while resolving difficult system problems or technical deficiencies.
• Lead effective meetings by setting objectives, ensuring the right participants, and driving detailed business and technical discussions/alignment.
• Document meeting discussions, decisions, and future steps to ensure alignment on expectations with internal and external teams.
• Promptly and accurately communicate project status, risk analysis, and risk mitigation plans.
• Articulate system and/or equipment designs, including layouts, technical specifications, and functional capabilities to internal customers and partner teams.
• Manage change order controls, purchase orders, and invoice validation/approvals.
• Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across multiple projects.
• Identify and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance Engineering and cross-team efficiencies.
• Generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions in compressed timeframes through collaboration.
• Travel up to 75% domestically, with travel intensity varying and potentially including up to three weeks in a row, including weekends.

A day in the life

You may manage one or multiple projects varying in scope, complexity, and duration. Daily tasks could include:

• Site coordination with operations teams and contractors on project execution or changes.
• Deep diving into project progress, schedules, and resources while identifying barriers and driving resolutions.
• Facilitating planning and implementation meetings with stakeholders to ensure alignment on objectives and next steps.
• Capturing and publishing detailed meeting notes to drive ownership and follow-through.
• Reviewing and approving Sorter System Functional specification documents and tracking sorter configurations.
• Brainstorming and developing workaround solutions to mitigate project delays or design issues.
• Performing systems installation quality, safety, throughput, and performance qualifications as part of acceptance testing.
• Supporting and training other engineering team members on Amazon’s safety, mechanical, electrical, and controls installation standards.

About the team

The Ops Engineering Execution Team delivers Automation Infrastructure projects related to material handling, storage, processing, and delivery for retrofits and new builds throughout First and Middle Miles across North America. The team is responsible for firm engineering, project execution, and final hand-off to customers. We are a diverse, upbeat, and creative team focused on continuous improvement, learning, and leveraging subject matter expertise globally. Collaboration and mutual support are core to our success.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience directly managing and being responsible for multiple large projects.
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, mechanical, operations, supply chain, business administration, or equivalent STEM field.
• Strong technical background in automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
• Intermediate knowledge of AutoCAD, VBA, and SQL.
• Experience working with Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
• Knowledge of automated material handling systems, packaging technologies, and storage solutions.
• Travel up to 75% (nationwide), involving air travel to regional airports and driving to site locations. A valid driver's license is required due to limited public transportation and rideshare options in project areas.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in engineering, mechanical, operations, supply chain, business administration, or equivalent STEM field.
• Experience managing external vendors, distributors, partners, or learning providers.
• Knowledge of Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing, transportation/logistics, and/or fulfillment/distribution centers.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, and MS Project).

Pay

The base salary range for this position varies by location:

• San Francisco, CA: $131,500 - $177,900 USD annually
• Boston, MA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
• New York, NY: $131,500 - $177,900 USD annually
• Nashville, TN: $107,600 - $145,600 USD annually
• Austin, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
• Houston, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
• Irving, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
• Arlington, VA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
• Bellevue, WA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually

Compensation includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
