Sr. Operations Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering Execution
Global Engineering Services (GES) North America (NA) Operations Engineering Execution (OEX) is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Sr. Operations Engineer to root cause, solve, and scale systemic engineering challenges in First and Middle Mile Operations.
About the role
In this role, you will collaborate with internal and external teams to develop, monitor, and innovate cost-effective solutions for our sortation and distribution systems. Your projects vary across building type and Line of Business, adding a vital contribution to the end-to-end Ops engineering lifecycle. You will work with a team of highly skilled and highly engaged engineers in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment. Our team works on hundreds of projects each year, offering opportunities to work on high-impact, high-visibility initiatives where you will be challenged, learn, and grow.
This role requires 80% regional travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.
Responsibilities
- Work independently with internal and external teams to successfully manage the lifecycle of challenging projects, acting as owner in delivering on project objectives and targets. Projects may span organizations or geographies in support of business objectives.
- Actively participate in firm engineering reviews, making tangible impact on proposed solutions for individual systems or components, overall systems architecture, and facility processes.
- Partner with internal teams, stakeholders, and external vendors to set project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
- Proactively assess stakeholders’ dependencies and milestones, problem-solve, and drive solutions to mitigate impact from issues.
- Lead and coordinate all execution efforts in delivering systems and automated equipment designs per established standards and guidelines.
- Perform equipment/system installation, throughput, and safety qualifications.
- Simplify, optimize, remove bottlenecks, and provide feedback while resolving difficult system problems or technical deficiencies.
- Lead effective meetings by setting objectives, ensuring the right people are involved, and driving detailed business and technical discussions/alignment.
- Document meeting discussions, decisions, and future steps, ensuring alignment on expectations with internal partner teams and outside vendors.
- Promptly and accurately communicate project status, risk analysis, and risk mitigation plans.
- Effectively answer project questions in detail and regularly produce clear, concise summaries for leadership/management teams.
- Competently articulate system and/or equipment designs, including layouts, technical specifications, and functional capabilities to internal customers and partner teams.
- Efficiently manage change order controls, purchase orders, and invoice validation/approvals.
- Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across multiple projects.
- Identify and lead process improvement initiatives that enhance Engineering and cross-team efficiencies, optimizing value and delivery.
- Generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions in compressed periods of time through collaboration.
- Travel up to 75% domestically, with travel intensity varying and potentially including up to three weeks in a row, including weekends.
A day in the life
You may manage one or multiple projects varying in scope, complexity, and duration. Daily tasks could include:
- Site coordination with operations teams and contractors on project execution activities or changes.
- Deep diving into project progress, schedule, and resources while identifying barriers, creating solutions, and driving resolutions.
- Facilitating planning and/or implementation meetings with project stakeholders to ensure alignment on objectives, expectations, and next steps, capturing and publishing detailed notes to drive ownership and follow-through.
- Reviewing and approving Sorter System Functional specification documents and tracking the on-time creation of sorter configurations with internal automation teams.
- Brainstorming and developing workaround solutions to mitigate project delays or design issues.
- Performing systems installation quality, safety, throughput, and performance qualifications as part of acceptance testing, frequently communicating progress to stakeholders.
- Supporting and training other engineering team members using knowledge of Amazon’s safety, mechanical, electrical, and controls installation standards and guidelines.

The Ops Engineering Execution Team is responsible for delivering Automation Infrastructure projects related to material handling, storage, processing, and delivery of products for retrofits and new builds throughout First and Middle Miles across North America. Requirements
- 6+ years of experience directly managing and being responsible for multiple large projects.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, mechanical, operations, supply chain, business administration, or equivalent STEM field.
- Experience and strong technical background in relevant fields of automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
- Intermediate knowledge of AutoCAD, VBA, and SQL.
- Experience working with Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
- Knowledge of automated material handling systems, packaging technologies, and storage solutions.
- Travel up to 75% (nationwide), involving air travel to regional airports and driving to site locations. A valid driver's license is required due to project assignments in areas with limited public transportation and rideshare options.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in engineering, mechanical, operations, supply chain, business administration, or equivalent STEM field.
- Experience managing external vendors, distributors, partners, or learning providers.
- Knowledge of Six Sigma, Lean manufacturing efforts, transportation/logistics, and/or fulfillment/distribution centers.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, and MS Project).
Pay
The base salary range for this position varies by location:
- San Francisco, CA: $131,500 - $177,900 USD annually
- Boston, MA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
- New York, NY: $131,500 - $177,900 USD annually
- Nashville, TN: $107,600 - $145,600 USD annually
- Austin, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
- Houston, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
- Irving, TX: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
- Arlington, VA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
- Bellevue, WA: $119,600 - $161,700 USD annually
