Sr. Nurse Practitioner (Neurology)

This position is in the Department of Neurology, Division of Neuromuscular, overseeing the ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic (ALS Association Sponsored). The Sr. Nurse Practitioner will provide care for patients, coordinate and implement ALS clinical trials, and serve as a resource within the disease group.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Provides expert-level comprehensive, age-appropriate, and episodic care to complex patients within the sub-specialty as part of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
• Interprets data, makes diagnoses, and orders appropriate interventions.
• Obtains patient history and performs physical examinations.
• Prepares patient summaries and develops care/treatment plans.
• Attends outpatient clinics and assists with patient management.
• Provides information to staff regarding patient care plans and conditions.
• Structures care plans to meet educational, physical, and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.
• Provides relevant patient care information to appropriate staff according to department guidelines.
• Educates patients and family members about diagnoses, complications, treatments, and medications.
• Performs routine laboratory procedures such as cultures, smears, venipuncture, and electrocardiograms.
• Performs advanced procedures including bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, skin biopsy, lumbar puncture, bone marrow harvest, paracentesis, and thoracentesis as necessary.

Emergency Care

• Maintains CPR certification.
• Manages airway, breathing, and circulation.
• Starts and provides basic CPR.
• Orders and administers anti-anaphylactic and supportive medications.

Prescribing Drugs

• Credentialed as an independent writer of chemotherapy orders; writes and signs chemotherapy orders consistent with JHH policy and scope of practice.
• Prescribes medications, including oral, parenteral, intramuscular, or subcutaneous drugs.
• Prescribes Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 drugs under Maryland Nurse Practice Act and DEA guidelines.

Research Coordination

• Identifies patients' eligibility for IRB-approved clinical research studies.
• Ensures protocol-driven tests, examinations, and procedures are ordered, performed, evaluated, and data is recorded.
• Coordinates scheduling, orders tests, evaluates results, and participates in patient care on specific protocols.
• Collaborates with Principal Investigators to ensure completeness of protocol requirements.

Educational Responsibilities

• Precepts new Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and participates in shadowing/teaching experiences for new staff and students.
• Develops expertise in specific areas and shares knowledge with colleagues as a consultant in planning patient care.
• Participates in rounds and meetings for consultation.
• Supervises and evaluates student/patient interactions in an academic setting.
• Provides feedback for improvement within the disease group.
• Initiates concepts to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the disease group.
• Serves as an EPIC Super User and resource for the disease group.

Fiscal Responsibility

• Assumes fiscal responsibility with a working knowledge of the evidence-based medical model.
• Effectively uses patient and institutional resources.
• Adheres to insurance-specific guidelines while optimizing individualized care.
• Utilizes referrals to Home Health to provide optimal care in the appropriate setting.
• Has knowledge of and utilizes all available resources.

Referrals

• Establishes a referral network.
• Collaborates with referring departments to ensure an optimal patient experience throughout the care continuum.
• Works in collaboration with physicians.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Nursing.
• Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
• Current CPR certification.
• Minimum of 3 years' experience in a related clinical area and proficiency in the specialty.
• Completion of the JHH credentialing process prior to the start date.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five years of related experience.
• Current CPR certification with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Pay

Starting salary range: $112,572 - $152,900 annually (targeted salary: $113,185, commensurate with experience).

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
