About the role

This position involves manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in mosquito control and stormwater maintenance. The primary responsibilities include cleaning storm water facilities, cutting weeds, cutting and chipping small trees and bushes, removing aquatic plants, and handling debris removal. Other duties involve maintaining storm water facilities, erecting erosion control devices, repairing filters, headwalls, spillways, fencing, and filling and laying sandbags. Tasks also include mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, and mulching. Additionally, the position entails operating various types of equipment such as dump trucks, crew trucks, bush chipper, bush hog, slope mower, stump grinder, and other power and non-power equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans storm water facilities
  • Cuts weeds, cuts and chips small trees, and bushes
  • Removes aquatic plants
  • Removes spoils, beaver dams, and other debris
  • Completes written daily accounting of cleaning activities and equipment used
  • Maintains storm water facilities
  • Puts up erosion control devices
  • Repairs filters, headwalls, spillways, fencing, and fill and lay sandbags
  • Operates equipment including dump truck, crew truck, bush chipper, bush hog, slope mower, stump grinder, and other power and non-power equipment
  • Drives dump truck and crew trucks
  • Operates bush hog, slope mower, stump grinder, power mower, power pruner, weedeater, chainsaw, power packer, power auger, concrete mixer, and other equipment
  • Uses non-power equipment such as sling blades, shovels, rakes, bush axes, and post hole diggers
  • Maintains and repairs equipment
  • Oils mowers
  • Replaces mower and trailer tires when necessary
  • Repairs minor problems on equipment
  • Fuels and oils dump trucks and crew trucks
  • Greases backhoes, priestsman, chipper, draglines
  • Serves as a lead worker
  • Acts as lead worker
  • May substitute as a Non-DOC personnel Inmate Supervisor and/or supervisor for Community Service workers
  • Completes reports on work performed, material, and equipment used by crew
  • Makes sure assigned tasks are completed safely
  • Affords assistance in directing traffic for loading and unloading equipment
  • Affords assistance in securing and un-securing heavy equipment prior to and after transporting

Requirements

  • Completion of the eighth grade
  • One year of similar or related work experience
  • Must possess a Class “B” Temporary Driving Permit with an “N” endorsement at the time of hire
  • Must secure a Class “B” license with an “N” endorsement within 90 days of being hired or promoted
  • Must submit a Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Driver’s transcript at the time of hire or promotion

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of equipment assigned
  • Knowledge of components, parts, operating principles, and maintenance requirements of equipment assigned
  • Basic mechanical skills (i.e., changing oil, lube, mix fuel oil, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Florida Traffic laws
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift or push in excess of 50 pounds
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor while interacting with the public
  • Ability to drive equipment in heavy traffic

Pay

The starting placement will generally not exceed 15% of the advertised minimal salary and is based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
