Sr. High Voltage Project Engineer

About the role
As part of the Engineering Department, the High Voltage Engineering team delivers preconstruction engineering and construction/commissioning engineering for High Voltage facilities associated with renewable energy power plants. This role involves overseeing high voltage projects primarily in the Western United States (Texas, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Hawaii). The engineer will act as an owner’s engineer, ensuring high voltage designs from EPC firms meet interconnection and commercial requirements while providing technical oversight during construction. The position is open to non-senior candidates who demonstrate passion for learning, extreme ownership, and a history of growth in rapid environments. U.S. remote-based candidates, preferably in the Pacific (PST) or Mountain (MST) time zones, are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction activities for Solar, Wind, and BESS collector high voltage substations and transmission lines (35kV to 500kV).
- Establish and maintain relationships with high voltage contractors.
- Review Substation EPC designs for compliance with interconnection agreement requirements, applicable reliability standards, and standard industry practices.
- Provide design review and advice on technical issues or inconsistencies with project documentation.
- Coordinate the review of power system studies such as load flows, short circuits, harmonics, TOV, and insulation coordination.
- Direct coordination with Interconnection Providers (utilities) to design collector substations, incorporating Transmission Provider requirements and AES specifications.
- Coordinate Generation Tie line or Transmission line design with EPC and internal stakeholders to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Support substation commissioning by reviewing apparatus testing and coordinating with utility and ISO.
- Work with a project team including real estate, permitting, interconnection, attorneys, finance, and construction in the field.
- Travel and fieldwork up to 25%, supporting projects across the country (wind projects nationwide and PV/BESS on the West Coast).
Requirements
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or other engineering disciplines.
- Senior Engineer:
- 7+ years of technical design experience, including substation design (Physical or P&C), Transmission line design, or power flow/studies.
- Proficient in reading control schematics for HV breakers, Main Power Transformers, etc.
- Mature understanding of grid integration requirements for renewables.
- Advanced knowledge of power system modeling (load flow, insulation coordination, grounding, arc-flash, TOV, harmonics, etc.).
- Non-Senior:
- 4+ years of technical design experience, including substation design (Physical or P&C), Transmission line design, or power flow/studies.
- Advanced proficiency in reading control schematics for HV breakers, Main Power Transformers, etc.
- Basic understanding of grid integration requirements for renewables.
- Basic knowledge of power system modeling (load flow, insulation coordination, grounding, arc-flash, TOV, harmonics, etc.).
- 2+ years of project engineering experience in an HV-related role.
- Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions among HV EPCs, Power Utilities, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.
Skills
- Project Management experience handling HV EPCs.
- PE Licensure in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, or Utah.
- Technical lead experience coordinating engineering packages such as IFPs and IFCs.
- Experience with ETAP, PSLF, PSS/E, or PLS-CADD.
- Experience in relay system testing.
- Experience in SCADA controls and architecture.
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or higher with an emphasis on Power Systems (preferred).
Pay
The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $113,000 and $141,525 per year. Base pay may vary depending on market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package includes an annual bonus.
