Sr Engineer I, BESS Optimization
RWE Americas is seeking a Sr BESS Optimization Engineer I to join the BESS Technology Optimization team. This role focuses on managing technical solutions with a project development mindset, ensuring utility-scale energy storage projects incorporate state-of-the-art technology and design features to meet evolving market conditions.
Responsibilities
- Support and drive strategic planning impacting product selection, technology roadmap, or project standardization
- Contribute to the evaluation of emerging storage technologies, emphasizing long-duration capability, cost reduction, reliability, and lifecycle performance
- Participate in continuous improvement of standard project designs, optimizing cost, performance, constructability, and operational reliability
- Coordinate priorities with Development, Procurement, and EPC to align engineering and business needs
- Engage in enterprise forums and technical steering committees
- Identify, evaluate, and resolve complex problems with limited oversight
- Provide technical due diligence support for storage suppliers or new equipment introductions
- Influence system architecture standards and performance expectations across projects
- Contribute to internal development of energy storage system designs, including cooling system architecture (air and liquid), controls strategy, and thermal performance modeling
- Mentor junior engineers and establish best practices for product evaluation, testing, reporting, and safety compliance
Requirements
- Master’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university preferred; Bachelor's degree in engineering required
- Minimum of 7 years of proven experience with energy storage technologies, including understanding of OEMs, products, and use cases
- Proven product management and product development experience
- Intellectually curious with a passion for exploring emerging energy storage technologies and challenging conventional approaches
- Open-minded, receptive to diverse perspectives, and committed to data-driven decision-making and continuous learning
- Experience mentoring engineers and technical resources, driving high performance, and cultivating talent
- Proven ability to empathize, build relationships, and effectively communicate with people from diverse backgrounds
Work Environment
This is an office-based role with occasional travel to other RWE Americas offices and field locations. The employee must be able to sit, walk, or stand for extended periods. Pay
The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois is $140,000 - $150,000. The listed range represents a good faith estimate for new hire salaries across all U.S. locations. Salary is determined by factors such as scope and responsibilities, candidate’s education and work experience, training and certifications, key skills, and market considerations at the time of the offer.
