Sr. Electrician

About the Role

The Senior Electrician provides advanced journeyman-level installation, maintenance, and service of electrical systems. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned electrical and related duties, including assisting the Supervisor in supervising semi-skilled and skilled staff.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the automated work order system, including:
  • Issuing work orders to electrical personnel and ensuring work is completed.
  • Communicating with faculty and staff to assess needs and schedule work.
  • Ordering materials required to complete work orders.
• Install and repair underground electrical conduit and wire for pole lighting and services, including:
  • Digging or operating a trencher for new underground conduit.
  • Laying out locations for new pole lighting or services.
  • Repairing broken underground conduits and tracing damaged wires.
  • Locating underground electrical for DIGTESS.
• Install new electrical services to buildings and extend old services, including:
  • Removing old feeders and trenching to new locations.
  • Sizing and pulling new feeders per NEC.
  • Removing old switchgear and installing new equipment.
  • Replacing breakers in switchgear and panels.
• Estimate costs for electrical work, requiring knowledge of electrical materials, building practices, and the National Electrical Code.
• Install, maintain, and repair transformers, generators, control panels, switches, circuit breakers, outlets, fixtures, fittings, and accessories, including:
  • Layout and installation of luminaries.
  • Working on energized parts and tracing electrical circuits.
  • Installing and testing generators and ATS.
  • Installing new transformers, outlets, and switches in renovations.
• Demonstrate experience in demolition and installation of electrical systems for renovation projects, including:
  • Reading blueprints and tracking costs.
  • Writing change orders and communicating with architects and engineers.
  • Installing panels, outlets, switches, luminaries, and conduit.
  • Calculating loads for new feeders and branch circuits.
• Assist the electrical supervisor in day-to-day operations, including:
  • Supervising electrical personnel and campus operations.
  • Training and mentoring shop personnel.
  • Assuming the supervisor’s role when they are not on campus.
• Respond to on-call electrical emergencies before, during, and after normal hours, including:
  • Fires, electrical outages, floods, and icy conditions.
  • Identifying problems, planning actions, and communicating severity.
• Install new electrical systems for research equipment and assist other departments with troubleshooting and installations.
• Assist with electrical installations for special events, including concerts, student move-in, homecoming, graduation, and sporting events.
• Maintain yearly training requirements, including:
  • Electrical continuing education, hazardous communication, and security training.
  • Driver’s education, first aid, asbestos, and lift operation training (boom, scissor, bucket, fork).
  • NFPA 70 training.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Electrical journeyman’s license.
• Seven (7) years of experience as a licensed electrical journeyman.
• Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license or state equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with NFPA 70, 101, and 1.
• Master Electrician’s License.
• 2+ years of lead or supervisory experience.
• Experience on large university campuses.

Skills

• Knowledge of all types of electrical equipment and hand/power tools common to the trade.
• Accuracy in all phases of work performed.
• Ability to operate one-man lifts, boom lifts, bucket trucks, and scissor lifts.
• Knowledge of medium voltage (15KV) terminations and testing.
• Physical ability to lift, push, pull, bend, stand, sit, kneel, and squat.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $29.09 to $31.67.

Schedule

Monday through Friday; 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to all weather elements and medium to high electrical voltage.
• Work off ladders, scaffolding, and tops/roofs of buildings.
• Occasional exposure to biohazards, toxic lab chemicals, poisonous gases, dust, dirt, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and all-weather conditions.
