About the role
The Portland Water Bureau (PWB) Engineering Construction Inspection section is seeking a Senior Electrical Inspector. This role involves interpreting electrical codes and standards, conducting inspections, and reviewing plans for compliance with electrical codes. The Senior Electrical Inspector provides lead direction to Inspectors and Trainees, including scheduling, coordinating, assigning, reviewing work, and training staff on technical problem-solving.
Key responsibilities include inspecting electrical installations for proper materials and code compliance, issuing certificates of inspection or correction notices, performing computer record checks, researching applicable codes, and verifying electrical licenses and permits. The role also involves advising on electrical construction methods, code requirements, and permit procedures to ensure a positive and equitable customer experience.
This position supports the Portland Water Bureau Operations group, conducts inspections on pump stations MCC, works with PWB Design Teams to review electrical wiring diagrams, ensures designs meet electrical code and standards, and performs Arc Flash studies to verify equipment safety. A second language is preferred but not required.
Responsibilities
- Interpret the National Electric Code and Oregon Electrical Specialty Code.
- Conduct inspections and review plans for compliance with electrical codes.
- Provide lead direction to Inspectors and Trainees, including scheduling, assigning, reviewing, and overseeing work completion.
- Train and advise staff on solutions to technical problems.
- Inspect electrical installations for proper materials and compliance with code requirements.
- Issue certificates of inspection and approval or correction notices.
- Perform computer record checks, research applicable codes, and verify electrical licenses and permits.
- Advise on electrical construction methods, code requirements, and permit procedures.
- Support PWB Operations group with electrical and operational tasks.
- Conduct inspections on pump stations MCC.
- Work with PWB Design Teams to review electrical wiring diagrams and ensure designs meet electrical code and standards.
- Perform Arc Flash studies to verify equipment safety.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code and the Oregon Electrical Specialty Code.
- Knowledge of practices, materials, and tools used in electrical installations.
- Knowledge of proper inspection and plan review procedures in compliance with the Oregon Electrical Specialty Code, including Cite It/Write It Rules (OAR 918-098-1900).
- Experience applying principles and practices of effective leadership, including scheduling, assigning, and reviewing the work of others.
- Experience demonstrating techniques and providing training to others.
- Experience writing documents and reports utilizing research and review of code documentation and references online and in computer databases.
- Valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at time of hire.
- Oregon "A" Level Electrical Inspector Certification at time of hire.
- Oregon Inspector Certification (required to obtain Electrical Inspector Certification).
To qualify for Electrical Inspector Certification (EI), candidates must meet one of the following:
- Two years of experience as an Oregon Supervising Electrician; or
- A degree in Electrical Engineering and three years’ experience in design, inspection, or supervision of installations covered by the National Electrical Code or Oregon Electrical Specialty Code; or
- Equivalent experience and training approved by the Board.
