About the role
Gilead Sciences is seeking a Senior Director of Public Affairs, External Affairs to develop and deliver structured public affairs and stakeholder engagement plans that support U.S. prioritized objectives. This role will promote communications campaigns to foster an external environment conducive to Gilead's U.S. business growth.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute proactive, integrated public affairs communication strategies and content that aligns with Gilead’s legislative, regulatory, and public policy objectives.
- Translate complex policy topics into accessible, persuasive narratives for external audiences, including policymakers, advocacy organizations, community groups, trade associations, think tanks, and media.
- Maintain awareness of public affairs developments to inform proactive communication planning.
- Identify and utilize opportunities, venues, and creative communications tactics to meet Gilead’s objectives.
- Ensure Public Affairs communication efforts complement Government Affairs’ policy, trade, and coalition-building strategies.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in social media, digital communications, or content strategy.
- Strong understanding of key Beltway publications, policy media ecosystems, and digital/social media targeting capabilities.
- Proven ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on content creation.
- Comfortable supporting senior leaders in high-visibility, high-stakes environments.
- Exceptional written, visual, and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to partner cross-functionally, collaborate, and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Knowledge of the regulatory, political, or social responsibility landscapes impacting business and reputation.
- Experience in a global or highly matrixed corporate environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and 14+ years of experience, or Master’s Degree and 12+ years of experience.
- Knowledge of public affairs, corporate communications, reputation management, consulting, political campaigns, PR agencies, or government relations.
Skills and Abilities
- Strategic planning and hands-on content creation.
- Ability to communicate complex policy topics clearly and persuasively.
- Collaboration and influence across various departments.
- Understanding of regulatory, political, and social landscapes.

Benefits
- Base salary range: $221,000.00 - $286,000.00 USD.
