About the role

Reporting to the Vice President Procurement, the Senior Director Global Strategic Sourcing - Supply Chain Procurement directs the development and maintenance of leading-edge global and regional sourcing strategies, governance, and tailored vendor bases for assigned categories. The role oversees critical vendors—global, regional, and local—that support the flow of BD’s life-saving medical technology products.

The position drives significant performance improvements in Quality, Service, Total Cost, Risk Management, Innovation, and Responsible Sourcing across categories including:

  • Freight (Air, Ocean, Parcel, Intermodal, and Over-the-Road)
  • Warehousing and Distribution (3PL and 4PL contracts, DC & WH consumables, capital equipment, automation partners)
  • Supply Chain-related software and systems

The Senior Director co-owns BD’s Scope 3 (carbon) emissions strategy related to product and materials transport, alongside Supply Chain leadership. The scope is global, covering Inbound, Intracompany, and Outbound materials and products.

The leader is responsible for building and developing a diverse team of seasoned sourcing and analytics professionals, fostering capabilities in spend penetration, sourcing strategy development, risk mitigation, budget forecasting, and supplier relationship management.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership (20%): Lead, coach, and develop team members in a structured, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
  • Category Strategy & Execution (25%): Translate corporate and stakeholder needs into aligned category strategies, ensuring execution across geographies, business segments, and key partners.
  • Supplier Relationship Management (40%): Guide the team in coordinating across Procurement, Quality, Operations, and other stakeholders to develop category-specific supplier stratification, development, and partnering approaches. Drive continuous improvement initiatives and manage cross-functional implementation.
  • Operational Excellence (15%): Engage with stakeholders, Procurement CoE, Finance, and Quality to advance processes, models, systems, standards, benchmarks, and automation, enhancing Procurement Operational Excellence.

Strategic Orientation: Ensure global category teams are formed, strategies are aligned and executed, and roadmaps for savings, value streams, sustainability, and innovation are developed. Maintain sensing, modeling, and analytics to refresh strategies as needed. Integrate savings and value streams into business commitments and reporting systems.

Sphere of Influence: Oversee negotiation planning, contracting, and Supplier Relationship Management for assigned categories. Develop and maintain risk mitigation plans, ensure supply base compliance, and monitor supplier-driven stakeholder performance metrics. Contribute to functional governance, operational excellence, and procure-to-pay (PTP) process improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; MBA or other relevant advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum ten years of professional experience in an international regulated manufactured products environment.
  • ~5+ years managing professionals.
  • Experience developing effective sourcing strategies for a wide range of categories.
  • Supply Chain operating role or cost/efficiency project experience preferred.

Skills

  • Procurement, Strategic Sourcing, and Supplier Management in Manufacturing and/or Services environments.
  • Understanding of supply markets and macro-economic factors relevant to sourcing strategies.
  • Cost management practices and strategic sourcing with a history of breakthrough strategy development.
  • Supplier value management, development, and continuous improvement.
  • Change management, innovation, and strategic agility in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Hiring, staffing, and coaching high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical acumen and comfort with statistical models.
  • Adept at fostering, developing, and leading inclusive and diverse environments.

Schedule

Travel required: 40%+ (domestic and international).
