Sr. Director Global Strategic Sourcing - Supply Chain
About the role
Reporting to the Vice President Procurement, the Senior Director Global Strategic Sourcing - Supply Chain Procurement directs the development and maintenance of leading-edge global and regional sourcing strategies, governance, and tailored vendor bases for the assigned group of categories. The associated vendors are a mix of global, regional, and local and are critical to the flow of BD’s life-saving medical technology products.
The position oversees the creation and execution of strategies and projects with the complete vendor base to drive significant performance improvements in Quality, Service, Total Cost, Risk Management, Innovation, and Responsible Sourcing in the assigned categories. Categories of responsibility include:
- Freight (Air, Ocean, Parcel, Intermodal, and Over-the-Road)
- Warehousing and Distribution (3PL and 4PL contracts, DC & WH consumables, capital equipment, automation partners)
- Supply Chain related software and systems
The Sr. Director co-owns the BD Scope 3 (carbon) emissions strategy related to product and materials transport along with Supply Chain leadership. The scope is global and covers Inbound, Intracompany, and outbound materials and products.
The leader is responsible for the selection, development, allocation, and evaluation of a diverse team of seasoned sourcing and analytics professionals, providing support and guidance to advance team capabilities in spend penetration, sourcing strategy development, risk sensing and mitigation, budget forecasting, source plan creation, ongoing supplier relationship and risk mitigation, and the continued development of commercial acumen and strong stakeholder alignment and engagement.
Responsibilities
- Team Leadership (20%): Leading, coaching, and developing team members.
- Strategy Development (25%): Corporate and stakeholder intake, translation into aligned category strategies, and effective execution across geographies, business segments, and key partners.
- Supplier Relationship Management (40%): Guiding the team in coordinating across Procurement, Quality, and Operations and other stakeholders to develop category-specific supplier stratification, development, and partnering approaches. Ensuring performance management, program management, and resource allocation. Driving continuous improvement initiatives and managing cross-functional implementation.
- Operational Excellence (15%): Engaging with stakeholders, Procurement CoE, Finance, Quality, and peer Procurement leadership to advance development and adoption of processes, models, systems, standards, measures, benchmarks, and automation.
Strategic Orientation: For the assigned group of categories, the Sr. Director ensures that:
- Global category teams are formed, inclusive of stakeholder and regional Procurement and Supply Chain input, and that resulting strategies are communicated, aligned, and executed.
- Category strategies are inclusive of regional business requirements, reflective of external market conditions, and result in three-to-five-year roadmaps of savings, value streams, sustainability, and innovation opportunities.
- Internal and external sensing occurs, supporting models and analytics are developed, and strategies are refreshed as needed.
- Savings and value streams are built into Class I and Class II commitments and reported in proper tracking tools and systems.
- Supplier selection aligns with sourcing strategies and is approved by appropriate stakeholders.
- Strategic stakeholder engagements are planned and managed to ensure alignment across internal and external supply chains.
- Appropriate business governance, cadence, and processes are developed, maintained, and executed.
- Supply Chain and Business Unit Planning is refreshed annually with BU and Regional Supply Chain Leadership, including C-suite alignment.
Sphere of Influence: The Senior Director:
- Has year-on-year financial accountability for price movement in the assigned categories.
- Is accountable for negotiation planning, negotiation, and contracting with suppliers.
- Leads and coordinates Supplier Relationship Management activities.
- Develops and maintains risk mitigation plans, including compliance for assigned categories.
- Ensures optimal supply base compliance, including corporate procedures and legislation-driven reporting requirements.
- Ensures proper application of the source-to-pay process, including customer-centric support and preferred payment methods.
- Monitors internal stakeholder performance metrics relevant to suppliers.
- Contributes to overall functional governance, operational excellence, strategy, and procure-to-pay (PTP) process improvements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; MBA or other relevant advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum ten years of professional experience in an international regulated manufactured products environment.
- ~5+ years managing professionals.
- Experience in developing effective sourcing strategies for a wide range of categories.
- Supply Chain operating role or cost/efficiency project experience preferred.
Skills
- Procurement, Strategic Sourcing, Supplier Management in Manufacturing and/or Services environments.
- Understanding of supply markets and macro-economic factors relevant to sourcing strategies.
- Cost management practices and strategic sourcing or category management with a history of successful breakthrough strategy development.

Schedule
