About the role
The Senior Director, Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for leading the execution of environmental health and safety programs across operations through strong partnership with business unit leaders. This role owns the delivery of EH&S field services, including service planning, audits, incident investigations, regulatory management, and leadership to reduce risk and drive compliance and performance.
Responsibilities
- Partner with business unit leaders and operational teams to understand risk profiles, align priorities, and deliver EH&S services that support safe, compliant operations.
- Lead the development and execution of EH&S service plans, including risk assessments, site support, inspections, and targeted interventions aligned to business needs.
- Own the enterprise EH&S audit program, including planning, execution, reporting, issue tracking, and verification of corrective actions.
- Own the EH&S incident investigation process, ensuring effective execution, issue resolution, and sustained risk reduction.
- Provide leadership and oversight for incident management and investigation, ensuring timely, high-quality root cause analysis and effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Lead regulatory compliance management, including interpretation of requirements, support for inspections, response to regulatory inquiries, and resolution of compliance gaps.
- Serve as the primary EH&S escalation point for significant incidents, regulatory issues, and high-risk operational concerns.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and leadership to EH&S field teams to ensure consistent execution, strong field presence, and alignment with enterprise standards.
- Monitor and communicate field-level performance metrics, trends, and emerging risks to drive continuous improvement and accountability.
- Collaborate with business unit leaders to develop and execute EH&S service plans that address operational risk, compliance needs, and performance priorities.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 13+ years of professional experience and 6+ years of diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization, and people motivation skills (or equivalent experience).
- 13+ years of professional experience and 6+ years of leadership experience.
- 10 years of progressive experience leading EH&S programs, preferably within distribution and warehousing environments.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex topics clearly and succinctly to diverse audiences.
- Intermediate computer skills, including familiarity with internet, email, and business application programs, and AI technology. Experience with Google platforms preferred.
- Advanced organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills to evaluate information, identify key issues, and drive effective resolutions.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and independently manage multiple priorities with a collaborative and proactive approach.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively, and manage own time and that of their team to meet goals / objectives.
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal direction.
- Ability to operate effectively in an environment without established SOPs or precedent; rapidly adapt to change or unexpected obstacles.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a highly ambiguous, evolving environment, including during large-scale transformations or entity separations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline.
- PREFERRED: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
