Sr. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney -Criminal Division

Job Description

The Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney will represent the State of Idaho in criminal cases, including tasks such as going to crime scenes, advising law enforcement, obtaining search warrants, screening cases, and presenting the State's case to the jury.

• Attends crime scenes and investigations
• Advise law enforcement agencies during investigations
• Obtain search warrants
• Screens cases
• Decide whether to file charges
• Meet with crime victims
• Attend multiple court proceedings
• Organize case files
• Prepare evidence
• Secure witnesses
• Prepare for jury trials
• Present the State's case to the jury
• Respond to post-trial motions
• Filing and prosecuting probation violations
• Respond to legal questions from law enforcement agencies
• Represent the State of Idaho in post-conviction relief petitions
• Direct staff in the preparation of pleadings, forms, orders, motions, legal memorandums and other paperwork
• Protect the rights of victims and those criminally accused
• Provide training to law enforcement officers, other prosecutors, child welfare advocates, and court personnel
• Conduct legal research
• Interact, mediate, and negotiate with opposing counsel, judges, office staff, other agencies, and law enforcement offices
• Perform time management and scheduling functions
• Meet deadlines and set project priorities
• Communicate and coordinate with co-workers
• Interact with county employees, witnesses, victims, defendants, law enforcement officials, visitors, and the general public effectively and professionally
• Aid other prosecutors in the office on cases when necessary
• Act as a special prosecutor in cases in other counties
• Attend Idaho Prosecuting Attorneys Association training to comply with continuing legal education requirements of the Idaho State Bar

Qualifications

• Knowledge of constitutional law
• Knowledge of criminal law
• Knowledge of criminal procedures
• Knowledge of rules of evidence
