Responsibilities

  • Create and implement planning for compressor development including Design and Review milestones.
  • Perform detailed and advanced centrifugal compressor design, covering mechanical and electrical components, material selection, gear design, bearing design, housing design, and rotor dynamic analysis for single and multi-stage compressors.
  • Evaluate mechanical aspects to ensure products meet life cycle requirements, including stress, vibration, modal, and fatigue analysis of all designed components.
  • Participate in the entire product development lifecycle: from customer requirements, design, prototype manufacturing, product qualification, to final implementation and launch.
  • Derive component-level requirements from assembly requirements to create part specifications and drawings.
  • Communicate with suppliers and vendors to assess manufacturability and review inspection results to ensure parts meet specifications and tolerances.
  • Instruct designers to create specifications and verify part drawings, applying manufacturing and inspection capabilities to choose materials and tolerances, including GD&T.
  • Create robust designs using the DFMEA method during design, analysis, and testing.
  • Establish pass/fail criteria for analysis and test results using fundamental mechanics.
  • Use simulation tools to evaluate design performance and reliability to support DFMEA.
  • Plan and develop test programs for prototypes using Design of Experiments for complex problems with multiple variables.
  • Instruct lab technicians to set up tests and gather accurate data.
  • Analyze test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional, performance, and safety specifications.
  • Develop parts qualification processes and procedures, making pass/fail decisions based on established criteria.
  • Validate designs through in-depth involvement in all aspects of the test phase, providing detailed analysis based on mathematical, finite element analysis, and experimental data.
  • Provide precise product performance results for marketing and sales teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the final product meets all objectives and customer requirements.
  • Document all projects and tasks throughout the development process, both at high-level and detailed documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of related experience (higher-level degrees may substitute for years of experience).
  • Experience with turbomachinery, preferably centrifugal compressors.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing capabilities and materials.
  • Solid grasp of mechanical engineering principles, including stress analysis, mechanics of materials, vibration, fatigue, and failure modes.
  • Experience in centrifugal compressor component design, such as gears, bearings, rotating equipment, motors, casting, and machining parts.
  • Experience in product testing and data acquisition, with emphasis on compressor performance validation.
  • Basic skills with CAD applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with global HVAC principles and practices and mechanical component design standards (ASHRAE, GB, ISO, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of test data analysis software and tools.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Experience supporting the development of highly variable products dynamically configured at the time of order using rules-based engineering tools.

Pay

The typical annual base salary for this position ranges from $90,400 to $151,800, plus a 10% bonus in Minnesota. Individual base pay will depend on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
