Sr. Clinical Veterinarian
About the role
The Senior Clinical Veterinarian is a key leadership role within the Laboratory Animal Medicine program, providing advanced veterinary oversight, clinical expertise, and program management in collaboration with the Attending Veterinarian. This position serves as a mentor and manager for a team of veterinarians, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, veterinary care, regulatory compliance, and scientific collaboration.
Responsibilities
Directly manage, mentor, and support a team of 5–6 veterinarians.
Conduct regular performance reviews, coaching, and professional development planning.
Oversee daily scheduling, workload distribution, and coverage to ensure veterinary support across all programs.
Promote a culture of collaboration, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Collaborate closely with veterinary technicians, supporting their professional growth and ensuring alignment between veterinarians and technical staff.
Foster a culture of inclusiveness, teamwork, and respect within the veterinary group, encouraging collaboration, mentoring, and knowledge sharing across all levels of staff.
Promote a supportive and nurturing environment where veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and technical staff feel engaged, valued, and empowered to contribute to program success.
Requirements
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited institution.
Active veterinary license in at least one U.S. state; ability to obtain Texas licensure within 6 months of hire.
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification strongly preferred; board-eligible candidates will be considered.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing veterinary teams.
Strong working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, OLAW, AAALAC, CDC).
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to balance clinical responsibilities with staff development and administrative oversight.
Qualifications
Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in laboratory animal medicine.
Working conditions include exposure to laboratory animals, allergens, and research environments.
Physical requirements may involve occasional lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
