Sr. Clinical Nurse

The Johns Hopkins Center for Substance Use and Infectious Disease Care Integration is seeking a full-time Sr. Clinical Nurse to support implementation research, programmatic, and clinical objectives in a hybrid role working with the Center and the Frederick County Health Department’s Street Safe Program.

About the role

Integrated into the Frederick County Health Department’s Street Safe Program, the Sr. Clinical Nurse will serve as the clinician champion for the SPRUCE intervention, an evidence-based program aimed at increasing uptake of HIV self-testing and prevention medication (PrEP) among persons who use drugs (PWUD) through social networks and peer training. This role is physically based in the Frederick County Health Department’s Street Safe Program (SSP) and is part of a multidisciplinary team focused on reducing harms of drug use, engaging and treating PWUD for substance use disorders (SUD) and related infectious diseases.

The Sr. Clinical Nurse will ensure long-acting injectable medications (LAIs) for Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders and HIV prevention are accessible to patients. Responsibilities include maintaining a visible on-site and community presence, coordinating healthcare services, managing laboratory supplies and testing, procuring specialty medications, providing nursing case management, and conducting community outreach.

Responsibilities

• Engage PWUD warmly and persistently, collaborating with community stakeholders.
• Maintain a visible on-site presence and build ongoing relationships to publicize services.
• Serve as a resource for staff regarding clinical and research protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Attend Community Advisory Board (CAB) meetings.
• Actively recruit SPRUCE study participants from SSP clients.
• Deliver structured interventions to study and program participants.
• Champion the integration of SPRUCE into existing services, ensuring compatibility with site workflows.
• Conduct intervention sessions alongside Peer Recovery Specialists and provide direct nursing services.
• Facilitate uptake of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) among PWUD.
• Manage laboratory and testing programs, including supply inventory, rapid and confirmatory testing, specimen collection, and prompt result monitoring.
• Perform phlebotomy/venipuncture in a non-stigmatizing and accessible manner.
• Collaborate closely with on-site and remote multidisciplinary teams.
• Conduct nursing intake for new patients, document in EMR (Epic), coordinate labs, and schedule telemedicine appointments.
• Provide comprehensive nurse case management services in-person or via telephone.
• Manage specialty medications, including receiving, inventory logs, proper storage, and communication with partner pharmacies.
• Coordinate between Johns Hopkins Specialty Pharmacy, insurance, and prior authorization activities for medication approval and delivery.
• Track prescription due dates and scheduled laboratory tests.
• Monitor and communicate lab, radiology, and diagnostic results to ensure protocol adherence and continuity of care.
• Advocate for patients and coordinate care with insurance companies and outpatient pharmacies.
• Order, store, inventory, and administer long-acting injectable medications (LAIs).
• Provide wound care.
• Conduct regular follow-up visits (in-person or via telephone) for medication education, adherence, lab/radiology appointments, referrals, and addressing barriers to care.
• Counsel patients on harm reduction, disease prevention, health promotion, and treatment plans.
• Promote available services alongside Peer Recovery Specialists and outreach workers to prospective patients, healthcare providers, and community organizations.
• Travel to partner sites, including re-entry programs, Opioid Treatment Programs, residential recovery programs, encampments, and other locations where PWUD are present.
• Maintain regular communication with referring providers and agencies for tight care coordination.
• Document clinical and research activities accurately and in a timely manner.
• Attend in-person meetings at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for educational and programmatic purposes.
• Provide clinical care within the scope of a registered nurse licensed in Maryland.
• Must have reliable transportation; mileage reimbursement provided at Federal rates.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related discipline.
• Current CPR certification; must maintain licensure and certification during employment.
• Minimum of two years of related nursing experience; additional experience preferred.
• Must attend employer-required trainings for electronic medical records, scheduling, and other systems.
• Certification as a phlebotomist per Maryland State requirements within 6 months of employment; employer covers training costs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in Epic electronic medical record system and MS Office.
• Basic data management skills.
• High level of motivation, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail.
• Flexibility in service provision that centers PWUD and working within a multidisciplinary team.
• Capacity to model and maintain a de-stigmatizing and welcoming environment for PWUD.
• Knowledge and interest in HIV, HCV, substance use disorder management, and public health aspects of infectious disease control.
• Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Pay

Starting salary range: $75,100 - $131,700 annually (targeted salary: $90,000; commensurate with experience).

Schedule

Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
